Kit Harington on Why He Bonded So Strongly With Emilia Clarke During ‘Game of Thrones’
Kit Harington: the man behind the romanticized Jon Snow on Game of Thrones. Strong in the face of adversity and boasting a protective, familial nature, Jon Snow retains a true sense of honor and a defined moral compass. His character is a fan favorite, and one whose final fate is highly anticipated.
Emilia Clarke: the woman behind the brave and daring Danaerys Targaryen. Filled with quiet determination and all-commanding sense of omniscience and poise, Danaerys is a force to be reckoned with.
Together, Jon Snow and Danaerys Targaryen make a perfect power couple, and the audience loves watching the two share the screen. However, it wasn’t until season seven that Harington and Clarke got a chance to work together, walking on to the same set, explained Kit Harington in an interview with Esquire.
Kit Harington sat down with Esquire to discuss Game of Thrones, how he feels about the show coming to an end, as well as his relationship with various co-stars. Harington explained to the interviewer why he feels that Emilia Clarke has become someone he can connect to in a way that he cannot with other cast members.
Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke share a similar journey: from drama school grads to ‘Game of Thrones’ stars
During the interview with Esquire, Kit Harington discussed his relationship with Clarke, explaining:
“Me, Rose, and Emilia have been best mates for years, but I never got to work with her [Clarke] until season 7. That’s a long time to be experiencing the same show and also the same kind of journey, me and Emilia, because we’ve followed the same path. We both came out of drama school and this was our first big show, and we became kind of the ice and fire of it all a bit—the two youngish leads, I guess. Probably the closest to what we were each experiencing was what the other person was experiencing…”
Kit Harington goes on to explain that Clarke is one of those people who enters a room and takes your breath away, before telling the interviewer what he thinks exists at the core of their relationship. Or, to use his words, why they are “mates.” He tells the interviewer:
“I think we’re good mates because we, maybe more than anyone else, know what the other one’s going through a bit. I don’t mean to sound like we’re going through the worst thing in the world. But I think no one else other than Emilia will know exactly what being on Thrones is like, the way we’re on Thrones. That’s really how we kind of bonded.”Esquire
Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke shared a very specific journey, one that many others would not be able to relate to. From drama school to fame (virtually overnight) isn’t an easy pill to swallow. And, while grateful for the experience, it’s clear, based on Harington’s words, that being Jon Snow on Game of Thrones isn’t always easy. And, playing Danaerys likely comes with the same hurdles.
