Game of Thrones star Kit Harington may be known for his curly locks, but you should start preparing now to say goodbye to his signature look. The man behind Jon Snow revealed that he’s ready to shed all remnants of his character — so much so that he may even be unrecognizable.
Harington, along with the rest of the Game of Thrones cast, is currently filming the eighth and final season of the fan-favorite HBO show. We won’t get to see how it all ends until 2019. However, we’re already dreading figuring out what to do with our lives at that point. Luckily, HBO has ordered episodes of a Game of Thrones prequel, but it just won’t be the same.
Meanwhile, Harington told Entertainment Weekly, that he knows exactly what he’ll be doing with himself. “I’d like to step away and enjoy the obscurity, cut my hair.” He truly wants to “make [himself] less recognizable as the character.” Basically, he’ll be going for a “completely new look and tone.”
When asked just how short he plans to cut his hair, he admitted, “Short-short.” He may be excited to get rid of his hair, but he admits that he will actually miss his beard. “The beard will be harder to get rid of — I quite like the beard. I like having the long hair and beard both, but it will be like ritualistic thing. I can’t go into my next role looking the same.”
He did note, “This role was brilliant.” However, he added, “I’ll need to get rid of Jon Snow.” Cue the tears. However, we can’t say we blame him, considering he’s been rocking the same look since 2011.
Although not as drastically as he has planned for the future, he did get a haircut between Season 5 and 6 of Game of Thrones. You may remember the time as the dark period in which we thought Jon Snow was dead — and Harington stuck to selling the idea by making his departure believable with a changed-up appearance.
Luckily, according to the BBC, we’ll likely still recognize him in his wedding photos. He’s set to walk down the aisle with his former Game of Thrones co-star, Rose Leslie, on June 23, 2018 in Scotland.
Harington and Leslie first met on the Game of Thrones set in 2012, with the latter as his romantic love interest, Ygritte. As Harington told L’Uomo Vogue, falling in love with Leslie was “easy.”
“Because the country is beautiful, because the Northern Lights are magical, and because it was there that I fell in love,” he explained. “If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love.”
We’re obviously hoping to see many of our favorite Game of Thrones characters at Harington and Leslie’s wedding. One of those stars includes Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow’s newest love interest.
Clarke has said goodbye to the show in her own way. She shared, “Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade.” After noting that it’s “been a trip,” she thanked Game of Thrones directly. “@gameofthrones, thank you for the life I never dreamed I’d be able to live and the family I’ll never stop missing #lastseasonitis.”
