‘The Knight Before Christmas’ Cast Will Seriously Get You in the Holiday Spirit
The holiday season is just around the corner. And what better way to fill your days with cheer than with a cozy romantic-comedy? Luckily, Netflix has you covered with enough spirit to last you until New Year’s. This year, the streaming platform is premiering The Knight Before Christmas, which features a star-studded cast, including Christmas movie queen, Vanessa Hudgens, and John Whitehouse, who play Brooke and Sir Cole, respectively.
‘The Knight Before Christmas’ release date and time
According to Netflix, The Knight Before Christmas premiere date is Thursday, Nov. 21. Meanwhile, the holiday film will likely start airing at the same time as other Netflix originals, which are typically released after 12 a.m. PT — 3 a.m. ET.
Where was ‘The Knight Before Christmas’ filmed?
Filmed in Ontario, The Knight Before Christmas sets up a romance between a woman named Brooke (Hudgens) and Sir Cole (Whitehouse) in the perfect winter wonderland setting. And during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hudgens compared filming The Knight Before Christmas to Netflix’s The Princess Switch.
“We filmed it in spring in Ontario, so, luckily it was still cool,” she said. “I definitely still used my hand-warmers. On Princess Switch, it was summer and hot in Romania, so that was a bit rougher. Even though it was springtime, in Ontario, it’s still cold.”
The actress also hinted that fans will get a glimpse of Santa’s Village: Muskoka’s Theme Park within the Canadian province. Hudgens also revealed the result will be truly magical.
“I remember one day we were filming in Santa’s Village, which is actually a Christmas theme park that’s open all year round for the lovely citizens of Bracebridge,” she said. “It was beautiful. They added more lights [for us] and it started snowing, and it was one of those moments where I couldn’t help but feel the spirit. I started singing ‘Let It Snow’ and it felt magical!”
What is Netflix’s ‘The Knight Before Christmas’ about?
Per Netflix’s synopsis of the film, Sir Cole is a “medieval English knight is magically transported to the present day.” Meanwhile, Brooke is a high school teacher. And of course, she doesn’t believe in love.
But can Sir Cole change Brooke’s mind? All signs point to yes. But as the two grow closer, things get a little more complicated. Brooke helps Sir Cole navigate through the present day to help him fulfill his “one true quest.” However, it’s an act that will send him back home to the 14th century.
Vanessa Hudgens plays Brooke in ‘The Knight Before Christmas’ cast
If you love holiday films and you don’t know anything about Hudgens, then it might be worth checking out the 30-year-old’s recent Netflix project. According to Hudgens’s IMDb profile, she starred in The Princess Switch and she will reprise her roles as Stacy De Novo and Lady Margaret when the sequel is released on Jan. 1.
You may also recognize Hudgens as Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, Lindy in Beastly, and Candy in Spring Breakers. She also played Betty Rizzo in Grease Live! and Maureen Johnson in Rent: Live. Hudgens is also set to work with Lin-Manuel Miranda in Tick, Tick… Boom.
“One of the producers, Brad Krevoy, brought it to me,” she said. “He was very excited about it, and I read it as another one of those really feel-good Christmas movies. It has a great message. It totally invokes that holiday spirit. It makes you feel warm and cozy and feel loved and optimistic, it makes you believe in magic a bit. It was kind of a no-brainer, like, what more do you need?”
Josh Whitehouse plays Sir Cole in ‘The Knight Before Christmas’ cast
Whitehouse’s IMDb profile may not be quite as long as his Knight Before Christmas co-star’s. However, the 29-year-old actor still has plenty of projects under his belt. Since 2014, Whitehouse has appeared in films like Northern Soul, The Receptionist, and Alleycats. His name was also attached to the axed Game of Thrones prequel, which also starred Naomi Watts. That said, fans probably recognize Whitehouse as Hugh Armitage from Poldark.
Now, playing Sir Cole isn’t the only thing Whitehouse did in The Knight Before Christmas. As it turns out, fans will hear an original song written by Whitehouse.
“I wanted to write the song from Sir Cole’s perspective and explore what it is to fall in love with someone from another world or lifestyle,” Whitehouse told Billboard. “Sometimes when I’m preparing for roles, I like to write songs in character to explore moods and emotions. Normally nobody hears them apart from me, but this time I was enjoying the outcome so much I felt compelled to share it and I am so glad that I did.”
