See the Star-Studded Trailer For ‘Knives Out,’ Chris Evans’ First Film After ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Steve Rogers got the happy ending he so deserved in Avengers: Endgame. It has been known that Chris Evans would be moving on from playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time. Now, we’ve got a look at his first post-Marvel gig in the upcoming mystery Knives Out. Here’s what you need to know about the film, the cast, and Evans’ future roles.

What is Knives Out about?

On June 2, 2019, Lionsgate released the first trailer for Knives Out as an Entertainment Weekly exclusive. In it, we see the Thrombey family, who came together to celebrate the birthday of patriarch Harlan, a famed mystery-novel author. The only problem? He dies that night, and his death turns into a familial game of Clue.

The plot, as described by director Rian Johnson, is as follows. “Harlan has built this massive empire up and he has a group of kids and their families who are all adults and who all to one degree or another live based on his success. When the family fortune is kind of in question or up for grabs, that’s when the proverbial knives come out,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

This is quite an impressive cast

(L-R): Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, K Callan, Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Jaeden Lieberher, Riki Lindhome, Toni Collette, and Katherine Langford in Knives Out

Take a look at the above cast photo, and you’re definitely going to recognize a host of popular faces. James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, plays the detective on the case, while Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You) assists him. The Thrombey family consists of Christopher Plummer (Beginners) as Harlan, Jamie Lee Curtis (True Lies) as his daughter Linda, and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) as son Walt.

The names continue down Harlan’s family tree. Evans is grandson Ransom. Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), and Riki Lindhome (Another Period) also play relatives of the deceased. And Ana de Armas, who portrayed Joi in Blade Runner 2049, stars as Marta, Harlan’s nurse.

Johnson, who also wrote the screenplay for Knives Out, has written and directed several films, including the 2012 sci-fi flick Looper. He also directed a few episodes of Breaking Bad. But he’s best known for 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

This film was certainly a departure for Johnson. “The idea was to take everything I love about a great Agatha Christie story and put it into a new original story set in modern-day America,” he told EW. “That’s kind of the essence of it.”

What else is Evans working on?

Even before he was Captain America, Evans had had an established career. His breakout role as the romantic interest in parody film Not Another Teen Movie set him up as a comedic lead. He followed it up with his first Marvel role as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four and its sequel.

Now that he’s freed up his time, Evans is diving into some new material. He is currently filming the Apple limited series Defending Jacob, based on the novel of the same name. Evans will also star in the film Jekyll, a new take on the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
