Rapper Kodak Black is no stranger to controversy. The Florida-bred emcee has made inappropriate comments about other celebrities in the past, and run into law several times since he was a teenager. In 2021, he became associated with another lightning rod for criticism: President Donald Trump.

Kodak Black got a pardon from Donald Trump

In 2020, Kodak pled guilty to firearms charges and was sentenced to 46 months in jail. He was behind bars throughout 2020, as was rapper Lil Wayne.

Then, in January 2021, both Kodak and Wayne got a surprise from none other than President Donald Trump. On Inauguration Day, his final day in office, Trump pardoned and commuted the sentences of several high-profile people, including the two rappers.

Kodak rapped about his release in his single “Last Day In,” released three days later. “Trump just freed me, but my favorite president is on the money / All they hatin’ presidents has become evident to me,” he said. In early February, he released the single “Every Balmain,” where he spoke about life after prison.

Kodak Black says Trump being voted out was a mistake

Kodak today owes his freedom to Donald Trump, and he won’t let his fans forget it. In March 2022, he stopped by the Full Send podcast to talk about his music and much more. When asked about his love for the former president, the rapper revealed that he wants to pay Trump back for doing him a favor.

“I gotta show support,” he said. “I’m forever [indebted] to that boy.”

Yak continued by saying that the United States voting Trump out of office and replacing him with president Joe Biden was the worst thing the country could have done: “Getting rid of Trump was the worst thing that America could have did.”

It’s not the first time Kodak has spoken in support of the ex-president. In November 2021, a year after Trump was defeated in the election by Joe Biden, Kodak tweeted, “Bring Trump back.”

Kodak spoke again in support of Trump in an early 2022 Instagram Live. “Man, Trump dat n**** boy, the f***,” he said. “Trump dat n****. This n**** Biden ain’t know nothin’, bro. This n**** say he finna come thru and legalize weed [in his first 100 days]. S***, he said he was gonna get in office, legalize weed federally. I really need for that s*** to be legalized federally.”

Kodak Black knew about the pardon before it became public

Kodak was immensely grateful to Trump for commuting his prison sentence. While the announcement was made on the last day of his presidency, Trump granted Kodak a pardon earlier, but the rapper decided to keep it a secret from other inmates out of fear of harm.

“I knew it was going down. I was keeping it to myself ’cause I was in the pin,” he said honestly. “Like, a lot of people died around me in the pin… So it was like, I ain’t finna let people know that [I was being pardoned].”
