Kristen Bell and More Hollywood Stars Who Don’t Believe in Monogamy
Two people in a long-lasting, committed relationship are hard to come by in Hollywood. Since it’s common for celebrities to file for divorce after saying “I do,” several stars have said “I don’t” to believing in monogamy. Some couples in Tinseltown have even admitted to being in open relationships.
You may be surprised by just how many famous faces feel that a long-term, monogamous commitment isn’t realistic. Here’s a list of celebrities who don’t believe in monogamy and their reasoning behind it.
1. Hugh Grant
It’s not incredibly shocking to see Hugh Grant make this list since we all remember that he was arrested in the ’90s for soliciting a prostitute while dating the gorgeous Elizabeth Hurley. Over the years, the actor hasn’t changed his stance on monogamy.
In 2016, during a radio interview with Howard Stern, Grant explained that he didn’t think people should be in such relationships, saying, “Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful relationships? No, no, no. I think there’s something unromantic about marriage.”

2. Kristen Bell
Actress Kristen Bell gave a revealing interview in the November issue of Men’s Journal in which she discussed everything from motherhood to her relationship with husband Dax Shephard to why she doesn’t believe in monogamy. The star stated that she’s “quite positive” humans aren’t supposed to be monogamous because of how “difficult” it can be.
Bell also opened up about how she and Shepard understand the importance of communication in their marriage saying, “He’s very open about what he needs to stay satisfied in our relationship, because if one partner isn’t satisfied, you just kiss it goodbye; somebody’s going to stray.”

3. Shailene Woodley
Another star who doesn’t believe in monogamy is Shailene Woodley. In fact, the actress isn’t even sure if humans are capable of it.
“I just haven’t met anyone where I was like, ‘Wow, I could definitely see myself spending a season of my life with you,'” she told Marie Claire in 2014. “I don’t even know if humans are genetically made to be with one person forever.”

4. Cameron Diaz
In 2014, Cameron Diaz made headlines for being anti-monogamy when she said she thought people who got into monogamous relationships were “miserable.” However, Diaz clarified those remarks and said she was actually referring to the character she played in The Other Woman, not her own life.
“My character said she doesn’t believe in monogamy and then somehow journalists were like, ‘So, you don’t believe in monogamy?’ And I’m like, ‘That is my character. You know I’m acting, right?'” Diaz explained.
She married rocker Benji Madden in 2015.

In 2013, Akon, who has multiple wives, gave his opinions about monogamy to TMZ and discussed why he thought males were better suited for polyamorous lifestyles.
“Women aren’t built to mate with more than one party … men are,” he said, adding, “At the end of the day, as a male, we are natural breeders by nature. We can’t even escape it if we wanted to.”

6. Scarlett Johansson
Actress Scarlett Johansson shares the belief expressed by some other stars that monogamy just isn’t “natural” because it’s something that requires a lot of effort.
“I don’t think it’s natural to be a monogamous person. I might be skewered for that, but I think it’s work,” she told Playboy in 2017. “It’s a lot of work, and the fact that it is such work for so many people — for everyone — the fact of that proves that it is not a natural thing.”

7. Tilda Swinton
Another star who sees nothing wrong with polyamory and has even participated in a polyamorous relationship is Tilda Swinton. The Academy Award winner revealed to Harper’s Bazaar that her living arrangement once included John Byrne, who is the father of her twins, and her other lover, Sandro Kopp.
“We are all a family,” she said. “What you must also know is that we are all very happy.”
Byrne has since moved out, but he is still a frequent visitor at the Swinton residence.

8. Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie reportedly started an affair while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston, so Jolie’s remarks about how fidelity isn’t that important don’t really shock anyone.
In a 2009 interview with the German magazine Das Neue, Jolie, who was living with Pitt at the time, said, “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”

9. Maria Bello
In 2006, actress Maria Bello explained to Esquire that she believes monogamy is a “lie” and pointed at marriage statistics to prove that humans are not monogamous creatures. She said:
I suppose I understand the idea of a lifelong helpmate and friend. But when you have to stay sexually monogamous to this one person, I think it’s usually a big fat lie. Read the statistics. Seventy percent of people are having affairs.

10. Tom Ford
Although he’s in a monogamous relationship and has been married to the same partner for years, Tom Ford called monogamy something that’s “artificial.”
“My own sex life is very monogamous and happy … just a happy married sex life!” he shared in an interview with Arena, before adding, “I think that monogamy is artificial. I do not think it’s something that comes naturally to us.”

11. Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller was once engaged to Jude Law, who cheated on his wife with her, so it’s not too surprising that she doesn’t think much of monogamy and described it as “overrated.”
“I don’t know, monogamy is a weird thing for me,” she told Rolling Stone. “It’s an overrated virtue because, let’s face it, we’re f**king animals.”
Law ended up cheating on her with his children’s nanny, but they still continued to see each other before breaking things off in 2006. Two years later, Miller carried on her own affair with married actor Balthazar Getty. She and Law then reportedly rekindled their romance in 2009.
The English actress later married Tom Sturridge. They divorced in 2015.

12. Ethan Hawke
Actor Ethan Hawke may have been trying to justify cheating on his former wife, Uma Thurman, with his current wife when he spoke with the publication Mr. Porter and stated that he thought cheating wasn’t a big deal.
People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity. “He’s cheated so he’s bad, she’s cheated so she’s bad,” as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous. To act all indignant, that your world has been rocked because your lover wasn’t faithful to you, is a little bit like acting rocked that your hair went gray.

13. Whoopi Goldberg
Television host and actress Whoopi Goldberg wrote a book about relationships, and in it, she explained that she thinks extramarital affairs are fine.
“Sometimes in a relationship, people can’t always get what they need, and if you have reputable people you can turn to in order to get what you need, I say go for it,” she wrote in If Someone Says “You Complete Me,” RUN: Whoopi’s Big Book of Relationships. “It’s a whole lot better than being frustrated and angry at the person you love.”

14. Emma Thompson
British actress Emma Thompson has been married to producer Greg Wise since 2003, but that hasn’t stopped her from questioning monogamy and just how valid our feelings toward infidelity are.
During a webchat in 2013, she said.
Monogamy is an odd state, and actually it’s an odd state for women. I think that we’re locked into certain ideas and certain romantic ideals that have shaped our thinking about relationships for some time. And I do sometimes wonder about whether there are alternatives, and about whether our fury and rage and disbelief and horror about infidelity is quite realistic.

15. Gwyneth Paltrow
We’re not exactly sure where Gwyneth Paltrow stands on this topic because she made a number of conflicting statements about monogamy.
One that really raised eyebrows is when she talked about how she “admired” those who cheat with the reasoning that it shows “human flaws.” Another time though, she declared, “I insist on monogamy. If my partner can’t live with that, he’s out of here.”
Still, some comments she made about her marriage to Chris Martin have led many to believe they had an open relationship.

16. Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith
Rumors have swirled for years that Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith have an open marriage.
In a 2015 interview on Howard Stern’s radio show Pinkett-Smith didn’t do much to put a stop to those rumors when she told the host that her husband has “all the freedom in the world,” and she’s not his babysitter. Prior to that conversation, the pair definitely made it sound like they had an open relationship when they spoke to Reveal about their marriage.
Our perspective is, you don’t avoid what’s natural and you’re going to be attracted to people. And if it came down to it, then one would say to the other: “Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now, I’m not going to if you don’t approve of it” … In our marriage vows, we didn’t say “forsaking all others.” We said, “You will never hear I did something afterwards.” Because if that happens the relationship is destroyed.
