Kylie Jenner is the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. And while many people have given her a hard time for that since she comes from so much wealth, at the end of the day, she still started her own business and is now richer than 99% of us. But she says there is one thing that truly led to her billionaire status — and it isn’t her family’s reality show.

Jenner made her money from Kylie Cosmetics

For several years, Jenner was the least-talked-about Kardashian-Jenner sister. Her older sister, Kendall Jenner, was receiving a lot of attention for her budding modeling career, and Jenner had pretty much taken a back seat to all her other sisters’ fame. That was, until she got her lips done and started wearing lip liner. She developed a whole new look for herself, and fans started to want to imitate Jenner’s lips. She capitalized on her newfound popularity and launched Kylie Lip Kits back in 2015. Today, her company, Kylie Cosmetics, sells much more than lip kits. And it’s made her an insane amount of money.

In March 2019, Forbes recognized Jenner as the world’s youngest billionaire

Back in March, nobody could stop talking about Forbes’ billionaire list — and that’s because Jenner was on it. Earlier in the year, Forbes projected that she could be the world’s youngest self-made billionaire (“self-made,” meaning she didn’t inherit $1 billion), but when the list actually came out, people couldn’t believe a Kardashian-Jenner could have built that much of an empire. And the craziest part? Jenner was only 21. Though she did receive some criticism from those who suggest her fame was the reason behind her success, she actually said something similar in terms of what she credits for making all of that money.

Jenner credits social media for her billionaire status

When Jenner learned she had earned the title of youngest self-made billionaire, naturally, she wanted to speak out about it. In an interview with Forbes, Jenner gave credit to social media, not her family’s reality show, for getting her where she is today. “It’s the power of social media,” she said. “I had such a strong reach before I was able to start anything.” She said she did the same thing she always does in terms of promoting a product. “I popped up at a few stores, I did my usual social media — I did what I usually do, and it just worked,” she said.

She also gives her mother, Kris Jenner, a lot of credit for helping her

In terms of “what,” it’s social media, but in terms of “who,” it’s Jenner’s mother, Kris Jenner. Jenner has said in the past that she credits her mother for helping her turn Kylie Cosmetics into what it is today. “I credit my mom a lot for where Kylie Cosmetics is now,” Jenner said. Kris Jenner is Jenner’s mother, but she’s also her manager — and manages all of Jenner’s other Kardashian-Jenner siblings as well. The family might have started out with a 30-minute reality television show in 2007, but they have since created an empire.
