Kylo Ren Missed a Major Skywalker Rite-Of-Passage in ‘The Last Jedi’ by Not Having His Hand Cut Off
Although Rey is technically the last Skywalker, Adam Driver’s character, Ben Solo, is a Skywalker by blood. His parents were Han Solo and Leia Skywalker-Organa and before he went to the dark side, he followed the Jedi path of both his grandfather, his uncle, and his mother. There’s one similarity, however, that Kylo Ren seriously missed out on in The Last Jedi.
This article contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The Skywalker men have a tendency of getting their hands cut off
Anakin Skywalker was the first in a long line of Skywalker legends. Fans first met this character in The Phantom Menace, where he was named the “Chosen One” and the Jedi who would bring balance to the force. Due to an unfortunate encounter with Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones, however, Anakin Skywalker lost his hand.
In Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker suffered the same fate after battling Darth Vader. Vader reveals that he’s, actually, Luke’s father. Although Luke lost his hand along the way, it’s this encounter that helped Luke Skywalker connect with Anakin and, eventually caused Anakin to destroy the Emperor.
It is somewhat of a rite-of-passage for these characters. Once their hands are replaced, they become more secure in their resolve. For Anakin Skywalker, that meant saving the people he loves, no matter the cost. For Luke Skywalker, that meant bringing his father to the light. Unfortunately, Kylo Ren did not have the same experience.
A fight at the end of ‘The Force Awakens’ left Kylo Ren injured
Although some fans might argue that he actually lost his hand during this fight, Rey first overpowered Kylo Ren during The Force Awakens. While battling in the forest, Rey created a gash going across his face. Ben Solo, however, did not lose his hand.
One interview, prior to The Last Jedi’s release, even touched on this subject, asking Adam Driver if his character had his hand cut off in the sequel. Both Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker lost their hand in the second movie of their respective trilogies. The actor quickly evaded the question, as the character kept his appendages in The Force Awakens’ sequel.
Kylo Ren did follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, becoming Ben Solo in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’
Well, Ben Solo did eventually “finish what his grandfather started.” What Darth Vader started, however, wasn’t exactly what Kylo Ren had in mind. With the Emperor still alive in The Rise of Skywalker and threatening to bring a “final order” to the galaxy, Kylo Ren decided to betray him.
In the final movie of the Skywalker saga, this character returns to the light. He helped Rey defeat the Emperor once and for all, sacrificing himself in the process. Although he didn’t have his rite-of-passage, Ben Solo truly redeemed himself and followed in the footsteps of the Jedi who came before him, as did Rey Skywalker.
