Lady Gaga and Christian Carino Relationship Timeline

It’s a sad time for Lady Gaga. Just days before the singer is up to win an Oscar for her role in A Star is Born, she and fiance Christian Carino announced their split.

“It just didn’t work out,” a source told PEOPLE. “Relationships sometimes end. There’s no long dramatic story.”

In mourning of the marriage that almost was, let’s take a look back at the two’s relationship.

The Beginning

The relationship was confirmed by Entertainment Tonight in February of 2017. The public confirmation came after photos surfaced of the two cuddling before Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance.

After the announcement, Gaga and the talent agent started going out in public together more often. They even attended the Interscope Records Grammys afterparty as a couple.

“There were cute moments of arm in arm and brushing each other’s side,” a source told ET of the night. “It was minimal PDA, but Gaga was glowing.”

By June of that year, rumors started swirling that the two were engaged.

In September, Gaga finally spoke publicly about her relationship with Carino.

“When I went backstage, Christian was by the stairs making sure I was okay,” she told Page Six of a concert at Citi Field. “The best part about being in love with someone is having them there to catch you if you fall.”

In October, Gaga took to Instagram to call Carino a “special someone.”

“After rollin around on the couch feeling sad with the help of some of my #grigiogirls and a very special someone,” she wrote.”I managed to dress up and feel better in a beautiful pink sequined dress generously gifted to me from @oscardelarenta.” The picture showed the two cuddled up with Carino resting his head on her shoulder.

In November, people started wondering if the couple had secretly gotten engaged as Gaga had begun wearing a huge ring. Later that month Us Weekly announced that the rumors were true. Gaga and Carino had been engaged since the summer.

After the announcement, the two went back to being relatively quiet about their relationship, save for a few Instagram posts featuring one another here and there.

By January of 2018, the couple had put their relationship on full display, kissing in public and backstage at award shows.

But as Gaga began receiving notoriety for her role in A Star is Born, her relationship started to take a back seat.

“Gaga is so over the moon at the moment,” a source told ET. “She is constantly telling those close to her how grateful she is to be at this point in her life and work with such incredible artists and be with the man she loves so dearly. Gaga is incredibly elated about her engagement, but because of how busy she’s been with [A Star Is Born], she can’t even begin to think about a wedding.”

The singer wanted to use the time to focus on her career.

“She had no idea the film would be this successful, and she is completely taken aback by the public’s reaction,” the source continued. “Gaga’s first love and one of the most important things in her life are her fans. She doesn’t want to let anyone down by not giving 100 percent right now.”

The Split

People began wondering if the couple had split up in early 2019. Gaga didn’t wear her engagement ring at the Grammys and also decided not to thank Carino in her acceptance speech.

The official announcement that the relationship was over came on Feb. 19.
