Are ‘Late Night’ Stars Mindy Kaling And Emma Thompson Friends In Real Life?
Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson star in Late Night, a new comedy out in theaters and available for viewing through your Amazon Prime account. The film is about a diversity hire (Kaling) who begins to work for the only woman in the late-night talk show circuit, and it’s getting a lot of impressive reviews. Here’s what you need to know about the women’s’ off-screen friendship.
The two actors have never worked together before now
Though she’s been in the business for several years now, Kaling’s never had the opportunity to work with Thompson before. However, she recently told a story on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert about how she adored the actress after seeing her in the 1993 film version of Much Ado About Nothing.
But Kaling has nothing but wonderful things to say about working with the Oscar-winning dame, saying that she’s been “tracking her career” ever since. “She just plows through any nervousness [that others might have] and she just wants everyone to be really comfortable,” said Kaling of her co-star.
How did Kaling get Thompson to star in Late Night?
In fact, Kaling said that she wrote the part for Thompson herself. Speaking on The Ellen Show, she said of her co-star, “She’s done so much drama and not that much comedy,” said Kaling as to why she thought of Thompson for the part. “But she’s really funny, and I knew she came from comedy.”
The Office actress knows that she took a risk. “It was a stupid thing to do, actually. And I had no backup, and I didn’t know her.” She continued, “I was just in L.A. — just creepily writing this movie about this woman that I was a fan of.” Fortunately, it all worked out.
Kaling’s daughter is named after Thompson’s character
As most fans of hers know, Kaling has a daughter, Katherine. She has, on numerous occasions, refused to speak about who the father of her child is, and won’t show any front-facing photos of Katherine, but she does enjoy speaking about motherhood when asked.
For those who have seen the Late Night trailer, you’ll recognize that Katherine is also the first name of Thompson’s character. In a Wired Autocomplete Interview, Kaling said it’s her favorite name, adding, “It was weird because I wrote the movie before I had the baby.” She says that both Katherines are “complicated.”
Thompson and Kaling clearly like each other very much
As evidenced by the interview, Kaling and Thompson get along very well off-screen. Thompson calls her co-star, “really fantastically nice and funny, and witty, and clever, and extraordinary.” She then told Kaling she’d get the Peter Rabbit books she wrote sent to her to read to Katherine.
Thompson doesn’t have social media, but Kaling has used her own platforms to share kind things about her co-star while promoting Late Night. The above birthday Instagram, in which she calls Thompson “one of the biggest influences on my career,” is especially sweet. This is clearly a true friendship.
