Laura Dern worked with the late Carrie Fisher on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and during a recent appearance on Ellen, Dern briefly spoke about what this experience was like.
Dern was the guest on Ellen DeGeneres’ show on Oct. 18, and although she could not reveal much about The Last Jedi, she did say she had a great experience working with Carrie Fisher.
“The amazing Carrie, who we all knew was just the most wildly forthright and incredible authentic being, and taught us so much about that,” Dern said.
It seems that Dern got to work with Carrie Fisher even more than most of the other Last Jedi actors, as her character is tied up in a storyline with General Leia Organa. Dern plays Amilyn Holdo, Vice Admiral of the Resistance. As revealed in a recent canon book, Holdo and Organa have been friends for over 30 years, and they got to know each other even before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope; Holdo was a member of the Apprentice Legislature of the Imperial Senate. She has been compared to Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series.
“She’s somebody who’s a bit off-kilter, who sees the world through a prism most others don’t understand,” Star Wars author Claudia Grey told StarWars.com. “At first Leia thinks she’s pleasant but weird, but as time goes on, it becomes apparent that there’s much more to Holdo than you might guess when you first met her. We don’t really have a lot of true oddballs in Star Wars, so it was fun to introduce one!”
It is rumored that Holdo and Organa will be at odds during Star Wars: The Last Jedi, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Dern has previously heaped praise upon her co-star Carrie Fisher, calling her a true icon.
“We put a lot of focus currently on what it is to be a female icon, what it is to use your voice, what it is to be comfortable in your own skin,” Dern told Entertainment Tonight. “She has always been one of the most extraordinary beacons, an original screen icon.”
The Last Jedi was the final Star Wars film that Carrie Fisher shot before her death in late 2016. It appears that her character has a larger role in The Last Jedi than she had in The Force Awakens, although Lucasfilm has said that she was meant to play an even bigger part in Episode IX, which had to be re-written following her death.
Laura Dern didn’t reveal a whole lot else about Star Wars while she was on Ellen, saying that she isn’t allowed to give anything away. However, she did say that she had an amazing time working on the movie, explaining that she got so into it that she accidentally made “pew pew” noises with her mouth during shooting scenes.
“I did have the greatest experience of my life,” Dern said. “I felt like I was seven years old again.”
In addition, a new picture of Laura Dern’s Star Wars character was also revealed.
