How Leonardo DiCaprio Felt About Working With Luke Perry in ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood hits theaters this week and the cast includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Starring alongside Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in the film is the late Luke Perry, who sadly passed away in March of this year.
When news hit about Perry’s stroke and untimely passing, the internet was flooded with an outpouring of love and kind words about the actor. DiCaprio was among those who’ve worked with Perry and had nothing but wonderful things to say. He recently opened up about what it was like meeting Perry and working with him on the film.
DiCaprio says he was starstruck
During the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, DiCaprio made a stop on the red carpet to speak with Extra’s Renee Bargh. When asked what it was like to meet Luke Perry as a fan, he said Perry was:
“Just the kindest, sweetest human being you could ever encounter. And I grew up with him and 90210 looking up to him as literally the coolest dude on earth, and honestly when I was on set, I was starstruck. I was like I can’t believe I’m sitting here. We got to sit down and chat and he couldn’t have been a more amazing human being.”
Perry’s role is that of Scott Lancer in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, a character who stars in one of the TV shows that DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton worked on. The fictional show is a homage to the western TV series, Lancer.
Shannon McIntosh, one of the producers who worked with Tarantino on the movie, told Entertainment Weekly that Perry’s character is very “charismatic” and “vivid” thanks to his performance.
“Luke went in and won that part and deserved that part and owned that part, so it’s really special that was a bucket list that he was able to work with Quentin. His performance is amazing and he will be remembered as we release this movie, and his family will celebrate his performance with us.”
Brad Pitt was awestruck too
Although Luke Perry had a lengthy acting career, many fans became acquainted with him from his work as Dylan McKay in Beverly Hills, 90210. It was during that time that Pitt found Perry to be the epitome of cool. In a feature piece with Esquire, he and DiCaprio revealed their thoughts when they first saw the former teen idol on the set of Once Upon a Time. While DiCaprio said he had a butterfly feeling, Pitt shared:
“’That’s Luke f*****g Perry!’ We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and Beverly Hills, 90210 was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers. It was this strange burst of excitement that I had, to be able to act with him. Man, he was so incredibly humble and amazing and absolutely committed. He couldn’t have been a more friendly, wonderful guy to spend time with. I got to sit down and have some wonderful conversations with him. It was really special.”
Perry’s family will be on hand to celebrate their father’s role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which hits theaters on July 26. Fans can also look forward to a tribute on Riverdale this fall which will feature an appearance from Perry’s former 90210 co-star, Shannen Doherty.
