Leonardo DiCaprio Meets 16-Year-Old Climate Activist Greta Thunberg: ‘Leader Of Our Time’
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio had a visit with teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg last week. He came away impressed with Thunberg’s poise and passion for the issue of climate control. DiCaprio called on world leaders to take to heart Thunberg’s words to the United Nations in September. Even more importantly, the Titanic star called on the world to take action before any more time is lost.
Here’s what we know about their meeting and their plans for the future.
‘Leader of our time’
DiCaprio was clearly inspired by the young activist and showed it on an Instagram post, saying “There are few times in human history where voices are amplified at such pivotal moments and in such transformational ways – but @GretaThunberg has become a leader of our time.”
“History will judge us for what we do today to help guarantee that future generations can enjoy the same livable planet that we have so clearly taken for granted,” the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor wrote. “I hope that Greta’s message is a wake-up call to world leaders everywhere that the time for inaction is over.”
DiCaprio has been something of a voice in the wilderness for several years, calling on anyone who would listen to take seriously his growing concerns for our planet’s climate crisis. To meet someone as passionate and compelling as Thunberg is surely an encouragement.
He concluded by noting that he plans to continue supporting Thunberg. “It is because of Greta, and young activists everywhere that I am optimistic about what the future holds. It was an honor to spend time with Greta. She and I have made a commitment to support one another, in hopes of securing a brighter future for our planet.”
Thunberg’s impassioned challenge to the world
Thunberg caught DiCaprio’s attention, and in fact, the world’s, when the Swedish teenager addressed the United Nations in September. Her intense and outraged speech called on the world for less talk and more action. The teen’s speech riveted the internet, thanks mostly to her poise and expressive delivery.
“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones,” Thunberg said. “People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
Other celebrities who love Thunberg
DiCaprio isn’t the only celebrity to be moved by Thunberg. Her clarion call has moved several stars to action, including Jane Fonda, Chris Hemsworth, Camila Cabello, Joe Jonas, Cara Delevingne and Ellie Goulding.
Actress Anne Hathaway sent the activist her support via Instagram after Thunberg was bullied – by adults – including several political television hosts.
“Dear @gretathunberg,” Hathaway wrote, “Please know that under every bridge that has ever been built there has also been a troll that comes with it–sometimes more than one. The bridge–meaning that which connects and elevates–is more important than the troll.”
