Leslie Jones Is Hosting a Reboot of ‘Supermarket Sweep’ and the Show Is Looking for Contestants
Calling all champion grocery shoppers. Now is the time to put your cart-wielding skills to the test. Producers are looking for teams of people to compete on an upcoming reboot of Supermarket Sweep. The show will air on ABC and be hosted by SNL alum Leslie Jones.
ABC is bringing back a classic game show
Supermarket Sweep was a popular game show that has aired in various incarnations since the 1960s. The original series debuted in 1965 and ran until 1967 on ABC. Revivals of the show aired in the mid-1990s on Lifetime and in the early 2000s on Pax. (You can watch episodes from the 1990s version on Buzzr.)
The concept of the show is simple. Teams of shoppers use their shopping skills and knowledge of products as they race through the supermarket, filling their carts with high-value items. The team with the largest total at the register at the end of “sweep” wins. In the new version, the cash prize is $25,000 — not bad for a trip to the store.
Leslie Jones is a huge ‘Supermarket Sweep’ fan
Jones is a huge fan of Supermarket Sweep and was instrumental in making the revival happen, according to Deadline. The comedian is one of the executive producers on the show.
“I’ve always dreamed of being on Supermarket Sweep,” she said in a statement after ABC announced it was picking up the show. “Seriously, I tried out for the show years ago; and after getting turned away, I knew I’d have to take matters into my own hands. Being able to bring the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!”
How to get on ‘Supermarket Sweep’
Producers are currently looking for teams of people to compete on Supermarket Sweep. An ad on Backstage — which is specifically seeking father/son or mother/son pairs — says they are searching for people with “big personalities and a passion for all things grocery!” who “wanna go wild in the aisles.”
To apply, go to supermarketsweep.castingcrane.com. You’ll need to provide a photo and answer questions about your personality, family, what you like (and don’t like) about grocery shopping, what your team’s food-inspired name would be, and what you would do with your winnings.
One thing you definitely shouldn’t do is bug Jones about how to get on the show. “I AM NOT THE ONE WHO CASTS,” she wrote on Instagram. “Do not ask me sh*t!! Go to the link and find out how to get on the show. No I will not look into nothing for no one DONT ASK!! This is for people who will be in la! SUPERMARKET SWEEP YALL!”
An airdate hasn’t yet been announced for the new Supermarket Sweep. According to the ad, initial interviews will be conducted via Skype with production to happen sometime later in 2020 in Los Angeles.
