Jones recently stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers. Her main reason for being there was to talk up her new Netflix special called Time Machine. Jones also took the time to talk about her time on SNL as a cast member.

Meyers asked Jones to recall how she got hired on the hit series. Jones immediately starts busting out laughing about it. She remembers how much she really wanted the part.

“I was driving to get my nails done….So I pulled in and I kept seeing my phone ring 212, so I thought it was just somebody calling going, “Ya, we sorry, we gonna go with somebody….But it kept ringing and it kept ringing, and I pulled in, parked and I was like, ‘Hello?’ Jones explained.

‘I’m a performer’

Jones took the call that changed everything for her. “I was like, ‘Oh! Right here in the parking lot? Yeah, let’s do this,’” Jones revealed. She spoke with Lorne Michaels and revealed the call didn’t go exactly like you’d expect. Michaels originally wanted her to be a writer.

“And I was like, uh, Lorne, you know I’m not no writer. You know, I’m a performer I belong in front of the camera,” Jones continued. “And he was like, ‘I know what you are, but I need you here so I can see exactly what to do with you. I don’t know what to do with you. Just come.’”

Jones plays it cool until the call ends

Jones remembers trying to play it cool and she said, “Ya, aight. You know. That’s cool you know what I’m saying? I see, I see ya in a minute,” Jones said.

Jones’ next statement was more than hilarious: “I had a beautiful burgundy Altima, and I jumped out and I ran around the whole parking lot going ‘RAAAHHHHHHHHH!’ The security guard knew who I was, he was like, ‘What’s wrong?! What’s happened? Has something happened?’ And I was like, ‘I got SNL! I got SNL!’ He was like, ‘What is that? Is it a disease?’”

Leslie Jones is no longer on the series

A few months ago, Jones took to Twitter to comment on her exit from the series and to address concerns from fans. She spent a successful five years on SNL and she even took the time to thank Lorne Michaels.

“Yes it’s true I am leaving Saturday Night Live,” said Jones. “I cannot thank NBC, the producers, writers, and amazing crew enough for making SNL my second home these last five years. Lorne Michaels, you’ve changed my life in so many ways! Thank you for being my mentor and confidant and for always having my back. You not only have my loyalty but you have my heart too! You have shown me skills I never imagined I had. I leave a better performer because of you.”

The show is definitely not the same without the lovable and quirky Leslie Jones.
