Liev Schreiber Salutes ‘Ray Donovan’ as Fans React to News of the Show’s Cancellation
Ray Donovan is done. The season 7 finale episode of the Showtime drama that aired Jan. 19 was the show’s last, the network confirmed to Deadline. While the cancellation isn’t a huge surprise, there was some hope that the show about a Hollywood “fixer” would be renewed for an eighth and final season.
Star Liev Schreiber had urged fans to show their support for the show
After the Ray Donovan Season 7 finale aired, star Liev Schreiber, who plays the title character, took to Instagram to thank fans for supporting the show. He also addressed the rumors that the series was being canceled, and urged viewers to reach out to the network to show their support.
“What an amazing journey it’s been,” he wrote. “I’ve been reading your comments, and the outpouring of love and support for our cast and crew has been truly overwhelming. I know the big question on everyone’s mind is whether there will be a season 8. Truth is it’s in the networks hands. So if you want more, reach out to them at @showtime, @raydonovan, and @cbstv and let them know how you feel.”
Showtime cancels ‘Ray Donovan’
Despite Schreiber’s plea, Showtime has decided the pull the plug on Ray Donovan.
“After seven incredible seasons, Ray Donovan has concluded its run on Showtime,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “We are proud that the series ended amid such strong viewership and on such a powerful note. Our deepest thanks go to Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, showrunner David Hollander and the entire cast and crew, past and present, for their dedicated work.”
The network had previously indicated that Ray Donovan was likely to end in the near future. Showtime president Gary Levine told an audience at the TCA Winter Press Tour in January that the series was “nearing the end of its run.” However, at that point, a final decision hadn’t been made about whether there would be a season 8.
Now we know that the cancellation means that the season 7 finale episode “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will function as the Ray Donovan series finale.
Schreiber salutes the show
After news of Ray Donovan’s cancellation broke, Schreiber was back on social media, where he offered a short-but-sweet message to the show’s fans. He posted a photo of himself from the show holding his character’s signature drink of Johnny Walker. “Sláinte,” he wrote in the caption, a popular Gaelic toast meaning “health.”
Fans — and family — were quick to share their feelings on the show’s endings.
“Congratulations on a tremendous run! Your talent, intelligence and leadership shine brightly. On to the next!” wrote Schreiber’s half-brother and fellow actor Pablo Schreiber.
“Heartbreaking. Best show on TV,” commented one fan.
“This can’t be how it ends. I’m heartbroken,” wrote a viewer who didn’t feel that the show’s last episode was a fitting send-off.
“Not right at all you guys will be truly missed!” added another.
