Lisa Rinna’s Daughter Delilah Reveals Battle With Depression and Rehab Stint
Lisa Rinna of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is very open about her personal life and family. In April 2018, she shared in an episode of the reality show that her daughter, Delilah Belle Hamlin, suffered from anxiety. Just last week, Hamlin revealed that she has been in rehab due to depression on several occasions, according to Us Weekly.
Her anxiety began at a young age
Rinna discussed Delilah’s anxiety issues with the other housewives in an April 2018 episode of the reality show, saying it started when she was just 11 years old. “She had step throat and three days later she said to me, ‘I’m not getting on the bus to go to school.’ We had to have a doctor come to the house. She would not leave the house. She was instantly agoraphobic,” Rinna said, as reported by People.
The reality star also described how her husband, Harry Hamlin, had to escort Delilah to school for almost two months. “He sat outside until about 11:30, 11:45. She could only stay at school for about that long,” she said. “Then they would go to the park and then they would come home. It was a freaky time.”
Rinna also spoke of how Delilah’s anxieties started penetrating other areas of her life. “She wouldn’t go in an elevator. She wouldn’t get on an airplane. She’ll probably have to deal with it her whole life, but she’s gotten it to a point where it’s so much better,” Rinna said on the show. “It was triggered by the sickness, we are told by the doctor, and Delilah will always have anxiety. She just has that in her makeup now, but she’s learned the tools to deal with it.”
Speaking up to help others
The 21-year-old model has a strong social media presence, with one million followers on Instagram. In revealing details about her rehab stints last year in a lengthy post on her Instagram Stories, Delilah was motivated to share her story in the hopes of helping others who may struggle with the same mental health issues.
“I’ve been hesitant to share this information with you guys because there are a lot of you now and sometimes that scares me,” she wrote, as reported by People. “I strive to try my hardest to be a positive influence on my younger followers. I wanted to share this with you guys today because it could help at least one person struggling with anxiety and or depression.”
Delilah went on to explain that her depression began after moving to New York to attend college. “This time last year I was in rehabilitation. I moved to New York to start my journey as a student at NYU. Not long after I moved to New York I began having terrible depression,” Delilah posted. “I started attracting negative people into my life because my thoughts were so negative.”
At one point, Delilah described how she got involved in an unhealthy relationship, which led her into a depression. “I got trapped in a severely unhealthy relationship that pushed me over the edge,” she wrote. “I couldn’t get out of the relationship because I thought I was deserving of it.”
After eight months, saying she “couldn’t take the pain anymore,” Delilah called her mom for help and went back to Los Angeles. “I knew the way I was living was unhealthy and detrimental to my mental health so I called my mom and told her I needed help… Two weeks later I was admitted into a rehab facility.”
Her advice to others
Delilah explained to her followers that getting help was the best decision for herself, saying, “I learned so much about being independent, feeling less shameful and guilty, I learned about self-love instead of self-deprivation and so much more.”
She shared that she returned to the facility again in June. “This time I stayed for 60 days (two months),” Delilah wrote, as reported by People. “I worked through traumas and self-love. But most importantly I learned what self-respect meant.”
The young model aimed to inspire her followers with lessons she learned throughout her experience in rehab. “Saying no is OKAY! Do only things that make you happy and make you feel good about yourself,” Delilah posted. “Don’t let another individual take over your life and tell you who you are or how to be. Take control of your own life and get rid of all negative people and energy that may surround you. And I guarantee this will lead to a happier life even if it’s hard in the moment.”
Delilah ended her post encouraging readers to get help if they are struggling. “If you suffer from anxiety, or depressions, or rather any of the things I’ve mentioned above, then don’t be afraid to be VULNERABLE and ask for help because it will change your life,” she concluded.
According to People, Delilah received numerous messages from followers voicing their support and gratitude for her honesty, to which she replied with a post of thanks and promised to answer each person individually.
