Listen to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s New Version of the ‘Magic School Bus’ Theme
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new version of the Magic School Bus has just been revealed.
Netflix on Tuesday released the first full trailer for The Magic School Bus Rides Again, and starting at 27 seconds into the video, viewers can hear Miranda’s rendition of the classic theme that an entire generation remains nostalgic about. The original song is so iconic that Miranda clearly didn’t see the need to change much, as this new one sounds almost exactly the same and features the same lyrics.
Before his Broadway smash hit Hamilton even opened, Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on kids programming like Sesame Street and the 2009 reboot of The Electric Company. Since Hamilton made him famous, Miranda has continued to work on family-friendly material, especially material produced by Disney. He wrote songs for the 2016 Disney animated film Moana and also performed the movie’s song “We Know the Way.” In addition, he recently lent his voice to the 2017 reboot of DuckTales.
Miranda has a few other similar projects in development. In 2018, he will star as one of the main characters in Disney’s Mary Poppins sequel Mary Poppins Returns; Miranda has described this as a “dream job.” In addition, Entertainment Weekly reported in July that he will be working on Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. He won’t actually be in the movie, but he’ll be working on new music with Alan Menken.
The Magic School Bus Rides Again is a revival of the cartoon series that aired on PBS from 1994 through 1997. Rather than being a full reboot, this is actually a continuation of the original show, with Lily Tomlin’s Ms. Valerie Frizzle returning to pass the torch to her sister, Ms. Fiona Felicity Frizzle (Kate McKinnon). Presumably, the original Ms. Frizzle will only appear in one or two episodes in order to ease viewers into the new dynamic, similar to the way that the whole cast of Full House appears in the pilot of Fuller House only to move away and remain absent from most of the series.
Netflix will begin streaming The Magic School Bus Rides Again on September 29.
