Disney fanatics will recall that there have been a lot of ups and downs in regards to the casting for this project. Lizzo wants to play Ursula, but Melissa McCarthy might be instead. Grown-ish star Halle Bailey was cast Ariel herself, and voices will be provided by TK and TK.

But then came the twist of the century. News outlets began to report that Harry Styles would be playing the romantic lead of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid. However, this was quickly followed by more stories saying that the former One Direction singer had actually turned down the role.

So Disney had to set out to find a new Eric. And fans have many, many opinions on the matter. Here’s a look at just a few of the options as presented on Twitter:

These actors volunteered themselves

Two relatively unknown actors decided to throw their hats in the ring via Twitter. David Cade, who got his start on the Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush, wrote, “Let me take a shot at the title. I’ll sing the seaweed off her.” Cade most recently appeared in the crime drama Into the Ashes opposite Luke Grimes.

Meanwhile, actor Christian Navarro made a Hunger Games reference, writing, “I volunteer as tribute.” Navarro is best known for playing Tony Padilla in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, the third season of which dropped on Aug. 23.

These musicians have been named

Though, as some have pointed out, Prince Eric doesn’t actually sing any of the songs in the animated classic, the new version of The Little Mermaid could change that. So many of the fan suggestions have been musically talented actors and even a few singers who haven’t acted before.

One of the most popular suggestions? K-pop stars. Hendery, a Chinese singer known for being a member of WayV, was brought up many times. And we can’t talk about K-pop without mentioning the biggest group in the genre, BTS. Member Jungkook was proposed as a possible Prince Eric by plenty of Twitter users, as was his bandmate, Jimin.

Finally, the other suggestions range from sort of likely to absolutely not happening. Darren Criss of Glee fame was brought up, as was Avan Gogia, both actors who can also sing and could be considered as possibilities. But many went with a star who has been compared to Prince Eric lookswise for years: Matt Bomer. However, we can almost guarantee that won’t happen, given that Bailey is 19 and Bomer is 41.
