‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot: These Cast Members Are Officially Returning
If you’re like the rest of us, you can’t wait for Disney+. There will be lots of exciting content on the service at launch, including Marvel movies and new films like Lady and the Tramp. But we’re most excited about the new Lizzie McGuire series, which is still in production. And now, we know a few of the characters who will be reprising their roles.
Hilary Duff starred in ‘Lizzie McGuire’ on the Disney Channel
If you were a child or a preteen in the early ’00s, chances are you watched Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel. The series, which aired for two (very long) seasons, was a fan-favorite and followed Hilary Duff‘s titular character as she navigated the strange waters of junior high.
During its’ run, there was also a film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie. And there was also the possibility to continue the show on in another, more teenage format, at ABC. But sadly, none of this worked out, Duff continued to grow her career in other ways.
The new ‘Lizzie McGuire’ was announced at D23
Now, 15 years later, the series will finally return. At D23 in August 2019, Duff took the stage to announce that a revival series was in the works. It would once again be titled Lizzie McGuire, and Duff would, naturally, return as the star. Creator Terri Minsky also returns. A press release from Disney clarifies where the series will begin.
“The new story picks up as Lizzie McGuire is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all – her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment – but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.”
Three other cast members will return
Now, Duff has shared a new photo of herself holding a script while standing with Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire), Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire), and Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire), who play her mother, brother, and father, respectively. “we are standing in what will soon be the McGuire living room. What’s up fam. We doin this,” wrote Duff on Instagram.
“We are incredibly excited to bring back one of the most popular Disney Channel series of all time along with some beloved and familiar faces,” said Ricky Strauss, president, Content & Marketing, Disney+ in a press release. “With Terri at the helm and Hilary, Hallie, Robert, and Jake back after all these years, it’s our honor to welcome the McGuire family into the Disney+ family.”
“Just like there is no Lizzie McGuire without Hilary Duff, there is no McGuire family without Hallie, Robert, and Jake,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide. “The original series holds a special place in the hearts of so many, and we can’t wait to introduce fans, both old and new, to an older, wiser, yet still perfectly imperfect Lizzie.”
