Lizzo is one of the hottest artists of the decade, known for her empowering songs, onstage flute-playing, and her outrageous outfits. Her hit songs “Juice” and “Truth Hurts” have become anthems for self-love and confidence, inspiring thousands of women and men all over the world.
Still, the artist herself recently opened up about the very real anxiety that she feels and how she sometimes struggles with her own confidence. Keep reading to learn how Lizzo became famous, why audiences love her body positivity, and what she does to deal with her anxiety.
How did Lizzo rise to fame?
Lizzo was born in 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. Her family moved to Houston, Texas, when she was very young and she spent the majority of her childhood years in Houston.
Lizzo was drawn to music and performing at a very early age and when she was fourteen, she started a rap group with her friends called the “Cornrow Clique.” She studied classical music at the University of Houston, specializing in the flute, and after graduation, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in order to pursue a career in music.
Over the next several years, Lizzo released her debut album, Lizzobangers, and toured both the United States and the United Kingdom. Her fanbase began growing exponentially, and by 2017, Lizzo had reached worldwide fame.
In 2019, her hit songs “Juice” and “Truth Hurts” hit the airwaves, reaching a whole new group of fans. She has also tested out her acting chops, appearing opposite stars like Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B in the popular film Hustlers.
The 2020 Grammy Awards should hold even more firsts for Lizzo, as she has received a slew of nominations for her third album, Cuz I Love You, and many of the songs written for the hit album.
Lizzo is known for her self-confidence
In addition to her super-catchy songs, Lizzo is best known for her impressive self-confidence and for the way she preaches body positivity. The singer recently admitted that her confidence now grew from a lack of representation on television when she was younger.
“I would watch things on television and look at magazines and I would not see myself,” Lizzo admitted.
These days, Lizzo’s shows are full of confidence, acceptance, and fun. She even ensures that many of her background dancers are plus-sized.
Lizzo is also not afraid to call out the media’s double standard when it comes to women and clothing choices. She’s often seen on stage and on red carpets wearing daring ensembles that show a lot of skin, helping to pave the way for women everywhere to love themselves and to feel more confident rocking whatever they want to wear, no matter their size.
Lizzo admitted she struggles with anxiety
Even superstars like Lizzo are not immune to difficult days. Recently, she opened up about her personal struggles with anxiety and how it has caused her “debilitating” stress.
She also said that she sometimes suffers from pre-show anxiety and that in order to give herself the energy she needs to get through performances, she just goes “harder and harder and harder.” Lizzo confessed that her anxiety actually “fuels who I am as a performer and who I am as an artist.”
Lizzo admitted that the way she handles her anxiety isn’t for everyone and that ultimately, she isn’t trying to sell herself, merely to give everyone the tools that they need to feel empowered on their own terms. Clearly, Lizzo is winning, and if her fans have anything to say about it, she will be around for a long time to come.
