A ‘Logan’ Spinoff Centered Around Laura Kinney Is Being Written

Logan director James Mangold says he’s currently working on a script for a spinoff movie that would focus on Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23.

This was revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, and although no Logan spinoff has been officially greenlit, Mangold says that a script is being written. He also said that the success of Wonder Woman this past summer has served as an inspiration, proving that a female-led superhero movie can be a big hit.

“Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist,” Mangold said. “The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

Producer Hutch Parker added that it’s possible that the Laura spinoff could be a different genre than Logan, in the same way that the upcoming New Mutants is more horror focused.

“Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way,” Parker said. “It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe.”

Hugh Jackman won’t be involved in the spinoff film. He obviously wouldn’t be in it, but he also won’t serve as a producer, either. Jackman told The Hollywood Reporter that he’ll be first in line to see the film, though.

The X-Men franchise is owned by 20th Century Fox, and they plan to do a whole lot more with it on the horizon than just the traditional X-Men film series. The next entry into that series will be 2018’s Dark Phoenix, but they’ll also be releasing some spinoffs, including New Mutants, which is about a group of young mutants and that has more of a horror focus. There will also be Gambit, the spinoff about the titular hero played by Channing Tatum. There’s also Deadpool 2, which is a part of the X-Men universe.

In addition, the studio has plans to release six other X-Men movies between 2019 and 2021, but these titles have not been announced. There’s no guarantee that an X-23 spinoff will end up happening, but if the script is in the works now and Fox decides to go ahead with it, it could theoretically be released on one of those 2020 or 2021 dates.
