‘Lucifer’ Star Aimee Garcia Co-Writing New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Comic Book Series With Former Wrestler
Fans adore her as Ella Lopez in Lucifer but outside of her work as a thespian, Garcia has a gig as an author. She’s now a bona fide comic book writer who is carving out a new lane for herself.
Aimee Garcia co-writes ‘GLOW’ comic book series with wrestler
Shortly after GLOW Season 3 dropped on Netflix in August 2019, its comic book sister series was announced via IDW Publishing. Garcia and former WWE wrestling pro AJ Mendez teamed up to co-write the comics and it marked their debut in the genre.
Based on the characters in the popular Netflix drama, GLOW vs. The Babyface launched its four-part collection in November. In a press release, Garcia stated she’s a fan of the show and loved comics as a kid. She expressed her excitement about bringing diverse characters into the story.
During an interview with LATV Network, Garcia shared that she pitched the story idea for a Latina hero to Netflix and the company gave them free rein to use any characters from the show.
She chose to focus on Yolanda (played by Shakira Barrera) and admitted that although she and Mendez are experienced writers, they had to do a crash course in comic book writing. It paid off.
Garcia ups her pen game with ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ comic
With their first comics on the shelves in 2019, Garcia and Mendez reconnected for their second outing with Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World. The upcoming four-part series will introduce a set of new characters and features artwork from Martín Cóccolo.
The description from IDW Publishing reads:
“In At the Spine of the World, the never-ending winter’s night is slowly driving an isolated town in the depths of Icewind Dale to the brink of insanity. To save them all, a perilous journey awaits a band of adventurers as they battle a furious icy god and uncover the plot of an ancient primordial evil.”
Readers will be able to meet Runa and other heroes when the series hits the stands in October 2020. Fans are advised to contact their local comic book shops or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to locate a store.
Garcia and Mendez just launched their own content brand
After two successful partnerships, the duo announced the launch of their own content company in July. Scrappy Heart Productions will create stories that feature versatile characters from different backgrounds. Garcia posted a message on her Instagram account to share the news and to talk about the importance of representation.
She and Mendez are working on a few secret projects, including one for Disney, but they also have another comic book series on the horizon called East Side Saints. It centers on a hero named Muerta.
Garcia can currently be seen in Netflix’s Lucifer and soon, fans can check her out in Marvel’s animated M.O.D.O.K. series where she’s voicing Jodie.
