Madonna & Lady Gaga Hung Out After The 2019 Oscars
The 2019 Oscars brought with it many surprises, but one didn’t arrive until the day after. A photo of Lady Gaga and Madonna at an exclusive after party is circulating the internet, and it has everyone talking about their relationship. So are Madonna and Lady Gaga friends now?
They’ve known each other for many years
Lady Gaga’s breakthrough in the music industry came in 2008, with her hit album The Fame. She continued her rise to success over the next few years, during which time she met Madonna for the first time, and they appeared on Saturday Night Live together.
At this time, things were still peachy between the two pop singers. Lady Gaga and Madonna were spotted together at a Marc Jacobs show during New York Fashion Week in Sept. 2009, as seen in the image above.
Madonna started her feud with Lady Gaga
Pop star feuds are major fodder for gossip. Though many are likely just based on rumors meant to stir up tabloid fare, others are very real. The feud between Lady Gaga and Madonna began in 2012 when Madonna spoke about Gaga’s music, specifically her song “Born This Way” saying “it feels reductive” of “Express Yourself.” “I can’t really be annoyed by it or insulted by it because obviously, I’ve influenced her,” she told the interviewer. Gaga subsequently responded, “She wouldn’t look me in the eye and tell me I’m reductive.”
However, as musicians, they run in the same circles, so they couldn’t avoid each other completely. Though it may have been a surprise for some when Madonna was photographed leaving the Lady Gaga party in May 2015.
Gaga later spoke about the feud
In her 2017 documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, the singer further addressed the feud. “I admired her always and I still admire her no matter what she might think of me,” Gaga said. She added that it was, as she’d previously mentioned, an issue with the way in which Madonna made the comments. “No matter how much respect I have for her as a performer, I could never wrap my head around the fact that she wouldn’t look me in the eye and tell me I was reductive.”
Are Lady Gaga and Madonna friends now?
Following the 91st Academy Award ceremony, Madonna and her manager, Guy Oseary, hosted an exclusive after party. Among those in attendance was Lady Gaga, who had just taken home an Oscar for her song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born. A photograph of the two pop stars shows them lying together, as Madonna caresses Gaga’s face.
This comes just months after Madonna posted a video of herself from the ‘80s, which is comparable to one of Gaga’s most notable lines from A Star Is Born. Of course, there’s no way to determine whether or not this was Madonna’s way of dragging Gaga, but many at the time thought it was. Regardless of what has happened in the past, it looks as though they’ve made up for the time being.
