Man Who Delivered Michael Jordan Pizza Says He Knows the NBA Star Didn’t Get Food Poisoning for 1 Reason
If you’re one of the millions who watched The Last Dance documentary, which chronicled Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls as they competed for their sixth NBA title, you were probably surprised to hear Jordan reveal that he had food poisoning the night before the “Flu Game.”
For years, the game in which MJ played so well although he was ill was dubbed the “Flu Game” due to reports that he was suffering from flu-like symptoms. But in the ninth episode of the docuseries, the Hall of Famer and those in his inner circle insisted it was actually food poisoning. Now, the man who delivered the pizza to the basketball star said he knows Jordon didn’t get sick from it for one reason. Read to find out what that is.
What Jordan and his trainer said happened with the pizza
Jordan and his trainer, Tim Grover, spoke about what happened when Jordan ordered pizza the night before Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. According to their accounts, the pizza was to blame for why MJ fell ill.
Grover remembered the delivery people showed up at the Salt Lake City hotel room to deliver the food and Jordan was the only one who ate it.
“Then, about 3 o’clock in the morning, I get a call to my room that just says, ‘Hey, man, come to MJ’s room’ and he’s literally curled up in the fetal position,” Grover said. “I’ve not known any flu that can hit you that fast, but I know how quick food poisoning can hit you.”
Grover added, “That’s my story, that’s what I observed. I was in the room when all this was going on, so if anybody had a better look than I did I’d like to see who that person was because they definitely weren’t there.”
But the person who delivered the pizza has his own side of the story and he isn’t buying anyone else’s.
The man who delivered the pizza begs to differ for this reason
After The Last Dance finale, a man named Craig Fite claimed that he worked at the Pizza Hut where Jordan’s pie came from and that the story relayed in the series is bogus.
Fite told The Big Show on 1280 The Zone that he knows this because not only did he deliver the pizza, he made it himself. He explained that since the order was going to the Park City Marriott where the Chicago team was staying everyone assumed it was going to one of the players. Fite is a Bulls fan so he volunteered to make the pizza to be sure no one messed with it.
“I remember saying this: ‘I will make the pizza, because I don’t want any of you doing anything to it.’ And then I told the driver, ‘you’re going to take me there,’” Fite recalled.
He added that he really watched how he made that particular pizza and followed all the food prep guidelines so he doesn’t believe there was any way Jordan could have gotten sick from it.
In the end though it doesn’t matter what plagued Jordan because even feeling as bad as he did he still went out there and dropped 38 points in 44 minutes to seal the Bulls’ victory.
