‘Manifest’ Creator Shares What to Expect in Season 4

Manifest is about to take viewers on one last trip. The hit series, which follows a group of previously missing plane passengers, has been picked up by Netflix for a fourth and final season, around eight weeks after being canceled by NBC. While show creator Jeff Rake had intended for Manifest to last longer, he’s taking what he can and finding a way to make his original idea for the ending work.

‘Manifest’ has been saved by Netflix

NBC canceled Manifest in June due to dwindling ratings, according to The Radio Times. But once it hit Netflix, the show soared in popularity, leaving fans hopeful that it would be saved. That day came on Aug. 28, also known to fans of the show as 828 Day.

“Couldn’t let a day as significant as today go uncelebrated,” read the announcement, which was shared on Netflix’s Twitter page. “Manifest will officially return for a super-sized fourth and final season, only on Netflix!”

Jeff Rake on ‘Manifest’ Season 4

When Rake came up with Manifest, he envisioned it would have six seasons. Now he’ll have to end the story in 20 episodes. It might be a challenge, but Rake told Entertainment Weekly “the endgame won’t change at all.”

“Yes, I have always talked about three more seasons — and part of that was chronological, because it’s always been my goal get to the series finale in real-time in accordance with the five and a half years that the passengers had back — and that might have to adjust somewhat depending on how these episodes roll out,” he explained.

“The good news is I am absolutely confident that 20 episodes gives me enough time to tell the entirety of the story as I always intended to,” he continued.

Rake also pointed out that even though the show has a new home, fans can count on it to maintain the same essence and quality.

“The audience shouldn’t be concerned that the tone of the show is going to shift, or the method of storytelling is going to shift,” he stated. “We’re going to keep making the show that everyone fell in love with.”

When it comes to the plot, Rake stayed mum. But he previously teased to Entertainment Weekly that it would reveal “what’s that end of the story, what happened to the passengers, what ultimately happened to that airplane.”

Negotiations with the cast are ongoing, according to Rake. But he’s “hopeful that everybody is back.”

When does ‘Manifest’ Season 4 come out?

Though Manifest Season 4 is still in the early stages, Rake expects production to begin by the end of 2021.

“We certainly expect to be in production this calendar year,” he shared. “I’m hopeful that cameras are rolling in November or December latest.”

“We’re going to work as fast as we can while still keeping an eye on quality control, because we want to get episodes to everyone as soon as possible,” Rake added. “We also want them to be excellent. It might take a minute for a brand-new batch of episodes to show up in people’s homes, but it’s going to be worth the wait.”
