How Long Have ‘Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay And ‘Younger’s Peter Hermann Been Married?
Celebrity relationships are something of a mystery to most of us. When we found out that our favorite actor or actress is with someone else in show business, we immediately become fascinated in their lives — and specifically, how they make it work. Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann are one such intriguing couple. Here’s a look at their marriage and how they got where they are today.
Hargitay is a fixture on Law & Order: SVU
Hargitay grew up in the Los Angeles area, the daughter of two working actors. She began acting in her early 20s, appearing in series like Baywatch and thirtysomething. Hargitay was also part of the main cast of short-lived shows such as Downtown, Tequila and Bonetti, and Can’t Hurry Love.
The actress landed her most popular role to date in 1999 when she was cast as Olivia Benson, a New York City detective who leads the charge against sex crimes in the city on Law & Order SVU. Hargitay has also portrayed the character on other shows in the same universe, including Law & Order, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Fire.
Earlier this year, SVU was renewed for a 21st season, making it the longest-running TV drama ever. Of this historical moment, Hargitay tweeted, “20 years ago, we started a conversation. We’re not finished. I’m profoundly proud of how far we’ve come. Prouder still of how far we’ll go. We’ve all broken this ground together.”
Hermann has found fame with the acclaimed series Younger
Unlike his wife, Hermann did not have a direct path into Hollywood. He got his start in the late ‘90s, appearing in the soap opera Guiding Light. A few years later, he took on the recurring role of Trevor Langan in SVU, which is where he met his future wife.
Hermann has continued to appear in various films and TV series over the years, including a recurring gig in Blue Bloods. Since 2015, he has starred in the TV Land series Younger as Charles Brooks, publisher at Empirical Press and love interest for Sutton Foster’s Liza.
What is their secret to a long-lasting marriage?
In a recent interview with People, the couple talked about how they make this 15-year marriage work: Laughter. Hermann calls Hargitay, “the embodiment of laughter — of joy,” saying, “it’s the way we find our way back to each other.”
“It’s this fantastically, wonderfully ridiculous way that we can swing back and forth any number of times in any given day. But fundamentally we know we have the same destination,” he continued. “We know where we’re headed, and it’s good. And we know we’ll get there together.”
They’re endlessly supportive of one another
Hermann and Hargitay, who have three children together, may credit laughter as the key to their marriage. But there’s one more element that can’t be ignored: how they support one another in their careers.
Hargitay makes this apparent on social media, tweeting about her husband’s “second career” after his appearance on a morning show while promoting Season 6 of Younger. Though Hermann doesn’t have his own social media accounts, we can assume that he roots his wife on with the same fervor.
