Mariska Hargitay Reveals Her ‘Most Precious Commodity’

It pretty much goes without saying that Mariska Hargitay has a lot going on. She’s a mom of three with a happy marriage to fellow actor Peter Hermann. She’s also an actor on a hit series, Law & Order: SVU. On top of all of that, she has her own foundation called The Joyful Heart. It’s safe to say she’s juggling a lot.

In an interview with People this year, Hargitay revealed what her “most precious commodity” is, and it isn’t all that surprising.

Mariska Hargitay has a lot going on. She works as an actor on SVU, where she plays the pivotal role of the main character, Olivia Benson. She is married to her husband, Peter Hermann, whom she met on the set of SVU. Their relationship blossomed into marriage in 2004, and they now have three children together, August, Amaya, and Andrew.

Somehow, Hargitay balances the work and mom life thing with seeming ease. But that isn’t all she juggles. She’s also an important activist, and she has a foundation that is extremely important to her. In 2004, she founded her nonprofit as an answer to survivors who were searching for answers in an attempt to heal. Hargitay received countless letters from survivors of abuse during her time on SVU, and the foundation is a way to answer them.

According to its website, the foundation’s mission is “to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever.”

That’s a lot for anyone to balance, and it turns out time has become Hargitay’s “most precious commodity now,” which isn’t all that surprising. She devotes herself to so much, including a family and happy marriage, as well as work and a foundation to boot. Hargitay spoke with People in March for the cover of the 2020 Women Changing the World issue. She admits to having to “think smarter to get more done.”

“There’s not enough hours in the day,” Hargitay explained to the publication. “I’m on a TV show, and I have a foundation and three children and a husband, and they all need, as anything that you value does, a lot of focus and energy. Time is my most precious commodity now. I’ve had to think smarter to get more done.”

‘You have to keep watering that garden’

Hargitay spoke with Parade in 2019, and she admitted that sometimes she feels like she’s “being pulled” in multiple directions. It’s understandable, considering she has so much on her plate all the time. She also puts an emphasis on putting in the effort when she says “you have to keep watering that garden.”

“Sometimes I feel like an octopus being pulled in so many directions,” Hargitay revealed. “I have so many different joys. I’m acting, I’m producing, I’m directing episodes and I’m having meetings for my foundation. Then I’m a wife and a mom, and you have to keep watering that garden. Relationships don’t just stay great.”

Mariska Hargitay clearly knows the value of hard work and dedication to multiple facets of her life. She’s an accomplished actor, activist, as well as mother and wife.
