Mark Hamill’s Biggest Roles Outside of Star Wars
Mark Hamill is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. Most people know him for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He was one of the original stars of the movies and it is his most notable role to date.
Before taking on Star Wars Hamill’s celebrity status was on the rise with several jobs that he was becoming known for, but nothing could prepare him for what was coming.
He reportedly knew the movie was going to be a big hit because he turned down a leading part in the show Eight is Enough. The filming schedule conflicted, and he wanted to be Skywalker. It’s strange to think about any other actor filling the spot, but we don’t have to. Hamill was able to get out of his contract and film the movie.
During the long gap between Star Wars episodes, Hamill has stayed busy. He raised three children with his longtime wife and continued working in TV and movies. Here are just a few of Mark Hamill’s biggest roles outside of Star Wars.
‘Star Wars’ changed Mark Hamill’s career
Although Hamill was a working actor in Hollywood before taking the role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1977, everything changed after its release. Before Star Wars, he had a lot of small parts on TV, like The Bill Cosby Show, The Partridge Family, and Cannon. Soon he landed a recurring role on General Hospital, as Kent Murray.
After becoming Luke Skywalker, he became an overnight success and pretty much everyone recognized him. Still to this day die-hard fans expect to see him at major comic conventions. He has become one of the main faces of the sci-fi world and a universal mascotte for geeks everywhere.h
While most people only think about Hamill as Luke Skywalker, he has had constant work since before the force. You may not have realized it because much of his work is in voiceover and animation. He has also been on several popular shows as himself, like The Big Bang Theory. Here are a few places you may have seen him.
‘Batman’ animated series and movies (1992-present)
Throughout the last couple of decades, Hamill has been the voice of Joker in the animated Batman movies, TV series, and some video games. You may not have recognized his voice though; he is as talented at voice work as he is with a lightsaber.
‘The Village of the Damned’ (1995)
Mark Hamill was in the 1995 version of The Village of the Damned. He played the priest of a town that was terrorized by children. A little like Children of the Corn, minus the corn. When a town-wide blackout causes ten women to become pregnant and give birth to possessed kids, no one is safe. Whatever you do don’t look into their eyes.
‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ (2014)
Spoiler alert. Remember that scene where the professor gets his head blown off because his chip was activated. Yup, that was professor Skywalker. If you are trying to put the pieces together, check out the video above. It’s gross and awesome at the same time.
‘Brigsby Bear’ (2017)
This film is bizarre, to say the least. But, it is also funny in its own way. Mark Hamill plays the father (sort-of) of the main character. We don’t want to give too much away. Just stream, or rent it, and “may our minds be stronger tomorrow.”
‘Child’s Play’ (2019)
Another creepy horror film is getting a reboot. This version on Child’s Play is getting an upgrade. Now Chuckie has Bluetooth and will be connected to other devices. That’s just what he needs. Another change is that Mark Hamill will be Chuckie’s voice.
“I can’t wait to bring such an iconic character to life, and present him in a way you’ve never seen him before,” Hamill, said. “We’re gonna have some fun ― and remember, he’s more than just a toy, he’s your best friend.”
Next time you are watching an animated Batman movie, listen carefully. You might be surprised to hear Hamill behind the creepy villainous grin.
