Marvel is finally making a ‘Black Widow’ origin story

Through her work with the Avengers, Black Widow proved she’s willing to do whatever it takes to help those she loves. After years of being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s finally time to learn how Natasha Romanoff became Black Widow. Marvel announced they would make a prequel detailing the story of this superhero to premiere in May 2020.

Admittedly, the plot details of this movie have not yet been revealed. Some fans think that other characters, including Tony Stark, could potentially make a cameo in Black Widow’s origin story. However, nothing has been confirmed by Marvel, as the trailer has not yet been released.

What we do know is that Scarlett Johansson will reprise her performance as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, the lead role of this film. The actress also doubled as the executive producer of this movie, often commenting on her character during interviews.

The cast and crew of ‘Black Widow’ is female-driven

Scarlett Johansson portrayed Black Widow in films like Avengers: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and most recently, Avengers: Endgame. For this prequel, Johansson also played a role in executive producing this film. After getting to know the character for several years, creating this origin story was “liberating in a way,” the actress explained.

“I feel like I’m in control of the destiny of this film, which gives me a lot more peace of mind,” Johansson said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I know her better than anybody. What was her childhood like? What is her relationship to figures of authority? This character is gritty and multi-dimensional but has a lot of trauma and has led an unexamined life. In order to operate at this elite level, she has probably had to push away a lot of stuff.”

As the executive producer, Scarlett Johansson made sure the behind-the-scenes of this prequel were driven by women. Cate Shortland, who previously worked on films like Berlin Syndrome, will direct Black Widow. The film was written by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson.

When does Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ premiere?

Until multiple Marvel spin-off television series, Black Widow is heading to theaters prior to Disney’s streaming platform, Disney Plus. This prequel is set to premiere in the United States on May 1, 2020, a time of year that is normally reserved for movie blockbusters.

“The movie packs a big punch. If that slot is reserved for movies that pack a big punch, then we’re in a good, good space,” the actress said during the interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
