Marvel Gives Fans New Glimpse at ‘Avengers’ Sequel at Comic-Con
Marvel didn’t disappoint fans at San Diego’s Comic-Con this year, bringing in almost the entire Avengers: Age of Ultron cast to tease the highly anticipated sequel, as well as debuting a sneak peek at their upcoming film, Ant-Man.
All of the Avengers — with the exception of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, who is currently eight months pregnant and only appeared in a brief video clip — were on hand, led (of course) by Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. The original Avengers cast, featuring Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cobie Smulders, talked about their excitement to reprise their superhero roles. Hemsworth even poked fun at Marvel’s recent announcement confirming the launch of a new series starring a female Thor, telling the moderator that the only thing his character hasn’t done yet that he’d like it to do is “become a woman.”
The panel also saw the introduction of Marvel newbies Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch) and James Spader (voicing Ultron) to the franchise. The entire cast helped unveil a much buzzed about teaser trailer for the film.
According to Mashable, the clip started off showing the Avengers drinking and enjoying each other’s company at a park at Stark Towers, now also known as Avengers headquarters. The superheroes are each taking a turn at attempting to pick up Thor’s hammer when Ultron, who has apparently been residing in one of Stark’s old Iron Man suits, shows up and reveals his evil plans to conquer the Earth.

The clip went on to show the destruction left in Ultron’s wake, with cities around the world left in ashes. The trailer also marks our first good look at Ultron’s character, who boasts a robot-like face with metal teeth and red eyes. It ends on a cliffhanger, with Stark seen standing above what appears to be a lifeless Thor, one of the many superheroes seemingly seriously injured in the battle.
Marvel also gave viewers a glimpse of a few of the film’s props, including Captain America’s shattered shield, as well as what appears to be part of Iron Man’s Hulkbuster suit (seen above.) A third prop showed a broken, robot-like corpse, which most fans are predicting is an Ultron drone.
Though the majority of the focus was on their Avengers follow-up, Marvel also gave a brief glimpse at some of their upcoming films. Josh Brolin made a surprise appearance during the Avengers panel, walking on stage wearing the Infinity gauntlet. Though Brolin won’t appear in the Avengers: Age of Ultron, he is set to Brolin is set to play the cosmic super villain Thanos in a future Marvel film.
Stars of the upcoming Ant Man – Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and director Peyton Reed — were also on hand. While the movie doesn’t officially begin shooting for several more weeks, the studio unveiled a reel featuring an action sequence from the film. In the clip, a shrunken Scott Lang learns how to ride the flying ant for the first time. Rudd and Douglas don’t actually appear in the clip, but their voices are heard narrating the reel.
Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy director and star Chris Pratt confirmed that there would be a Guardians 2 released in 2017, although the first isn’t hitting theaters until August 1. The studio didn’t reveal much more about their next phase of movies, despite that they still have six premiere dates scheduled for the future. But while fans are still eagerly awaiting an official announcement of the studio’s future projects, it’s clear they have plenty to look forward to with Guardians and the second Avengers headed their way.
