Marvel: Kang is Messing with the Timestream in the Comics, Too
Marvel’s big reveal of Kang the Conquerer as the leader of the Time Variance Authority in Loki was deeply satisfying for a lot of fans. And now it looks like he’s about to get up to some timestream-related shenanigans in the comics, too.
Marvel’s upcoming ‘Timeless’ one-shot
At the end of Loki’s first season, we find out that He Who Remains is none other than Kang the Conquerer (Jonathan Majors). So it’s Kang who has been at the head of the TVA, pruning variants in the name of protecting the sacred timeline. Of course, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) throws all that out the window. And now the multiverse is basically in chaos.
It looks like things might be headed in a similar direction in the comics, as well. Marvel has announced it’s planning a Timeless one-shot, with Kang at the center of the action. The creative team behind the comic will consist of writer Jed MacKay and artists Kev Walker, Greg Land, and Mark Bagley.
A first look at the issue’s cover, which can be seen on Marvel’s website, is pretty impactful. It shows us Kang standing amid images from the timestream that include glimpses of Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Captain America, and more. So it seems Kang will be influencing the timelines of some of our favorite heroes in one way or another.
How will ‘Timeless’ affect the Marvel universe?
The ripple effects of this one-shot clearly aren’t going to be limited to this single comic. Kang’s interference will apparently have ripple effects for a lot of our favorite characters in 2022.
“Our magnificent Marvel fans are sure to [be] thrilled by the spectacular stories we have planned for 2022, and Timeless serves as its seismic setup, taking our characters to some most unexpected places – and time periods – with plenty of secrets and surprises along the way! A look at Marvel’s past, present and future…it’s all connected!” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski.
Marvel also explained that, as is the case in Loki, Kang loses control of the timestream he worked to maintain.
“When a parallel timeline threatens to overwrite the future that Kang has fought so long and so hard to control, the master of the ages will have no choice but to go to war with time itself, battling through days of tomorrow as he struggles to prevent the end of what is to come!” Marvel said.
Marvel is playing with our expectations, and it’s great
Both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the comics, Marvel has been doing a fair amount of remixing lately. We’ve seen this most prominently in What If…? on Disney+.
The characters we love have decades of lore built up around them. And fans often hold that continuity and canon dear. But it’s a lot of fun, and an interesting intellectual exercise, to change the circumstances of their lives and explore how they would react.
It looks like this could be the premise of some of the comics we’re going to see in the upcoming year. It challenges our expectations and what we think we know about these characters, and that could be pretty exciting for readers.
The Timeless one-shot is set to hit shelves in December.
