Is Marvel Planning To Kill Off This Avenger In Phase 4?

As it turns out, there are real stakes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Major characters have died — two of whom were part of the Original Six Avengers team. So who’s next to die? Here’s our prediction for Phase 4.

Only four of the original Avengers are still alive

If you’re reading this, you very likely know exactly what happens in Avengers: Endgame. (And if you don’t, we’d suggest stopping now.) Regardless, it’s worth rehashing where our heroes are at this point in time.

In Endgame, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) died when she sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone. Later, Tony Stark (Iron Man) succumbed to his injuries after using the Infinity Stones to kill off Thanos and his minions. That leaves (from top left) Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Thor, and Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Why Hulk will probably live

Right now, it’s unknown as to what Hulk’s future is. He was last seen in Endgame sending Steve to the future (more on that to come), working the controls of the time machine he helped to create. And as of now, we have no reason to believe he’ll be in any future films.

So will they kill him off offscreen? It’s unlikely — fans still have an attachment to the character, who experienced quite a bit of growth throughout the films. Actor Mark Ruffalo recently shared that he had spoken (or was soon to speak) with Kevin Feige about Hulk’s future — which means we’ll probably see him again, though perhaps not in Phase 4.

Thor isn’t going to die yet — we don’t think

Right now, Thor is safe. He was last seen leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy (but definitely not as their leader). That could have been an adequate ending for the character — he passed on the crown to Valkyrie, said his peace with the Avengers, and effectively “retired.”

But we haven’t seen the last of Thor. He’ll return in the upcoming MCU film Thor: Love and Thunder. There’s no reason to believe that Thor will die in that movie, but then again, you never know. It’s likely he’ll make it out alive, but now that we’ve seen the stakes, we’re not placing bets.

Hawkeye will survive but leave the MCU

The only other of the Original Avengers to get another installment is Hawkeye. It would be kind of weird to give him a movie at this point — he’s retired himself on more than one occasion and keeps getting brought back into the mix, so Marvel had to go a different way with the character.

The Hawkeye Disney+ series will see Jeremy Renner’s character passing the torch onto a new hero: Kate Bishop. As of now, the actor is set to reprise his role in the miniseries. Given the emphasis they’ve placed on Clint and his family — and considering many think he should have died instead of Natasha — we doubt he’ll die in Phase 4. It’s more likely that he’ll just retire one final time.

It has to be Captain America

So who will die in Phase 4? If Marvel does decide to kill another of the Original Avengers soon, it’s going to be Cap. Why? Well, it’s pretty simple really. He’s old.

In Endgame, we see Old Man Cap, who traveled back in time to return the Stones and then lived out his life with Peggy Carter, handoff his shield to Falcon. Actor Chris Evans has made it pretty clear that he doesn’t plan to return to the MCU, so we can imagine there may be some offhand reference to him in the upcoming Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. And perhaps that will be about his death from natural causes.
