There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the Disney+ Marvel TV series, many of which aren’t due out for years. MCU actor Jeremy Renner is poised to return as the titular character in Hawkeye, but recent allegations against him have put this into question. Here’s why he almost definitely won’t be recast based on what we know now.
Jeremy Renner is Clint Barton in the MCU
Renner has been a part of the MCU since 2011’s Thor, when he had a small, uncredited cameo as SHIELD agent Clint Barton. We next saw him in The Avengers, when he officially joined the team as Hawkeye, who is especially skilled with a bow and arrow. He makes up one of the OG Six Avengers.
Since then, Renner has reprised his role in three films: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. He was absent from Avengers: Infinity War because Clint was on house arrest, spending time with his family.
Renner will star in the Disney+ Marvel series ‘Hawkeye’
Of the six original Avengers, only Renner and Scarlett Johansson didn’t their own solo films. Now, that’s being amended for the latter, but in Renner’s case, they’re going a different direction: A miniseries on the soon-to-be-released streaming service Disney+.
We know very few details so far about the show, only that Renner is set to reprise his role, but will be “passing the torch” so to speak to a new Hawkeye: Kate Bishop. Hailee Steinfeld is rumored to be in talks for that role, but nothing has been confirmed.
What was Renner accused of?
Most of the Marvel actors have managed to ruffle a few feathers from time to time (cough Johansson cough), but none have been revealed to have done anything that would be a fireable offense (at least, not that we know of). However, now Renner is some controversy.
His ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, is looking to get full custody of their daughter, Ava. She claims Renner has “ongoing substance abuse” issues, and that he threatened her life years prior. According to the Los Angeles Times, Renner denies all of the allegations against him.
Disney reportedly ‘considered’ removing him
After the news broke, fans broke out into a panic. Some felt that Disney should take action, with Reddit user Little America writing that it’s “funny [Marvel] fire[d] someone like James Gunn over jokes but not a scumbag with serious allegations.” Others, like The Mary Sue writer Kate Gardner, think that Renner “doesn’t need more movies, TV shows, and apps when dangerous allegations like these are in the air. “
According to the Independent, the matter hasn’t been entirely ignored. The publication reports that Disney “considered replacing” Renner, but ultimately decided against it. So for now, as far as the public is aware, Renner will be in Hawkeye.
Here’s why Renner is sticking around
It’s never easy to figure out these kinds of matters. The James Gunn case referred to previously, for example, was a bit more cut-and-dry: The Guardians of the Galaxy director did, in fact, tweet what many accused him of. But he was eventually brought back on for Vol. 3, because they were, after all, just jokes, as far as the public is concerned.
However, as some on Reddit pointed out, it seems like this is an easy case because Renner is already on his way out with Hawkeye. Maybe they’ll cut back the number of episodes he’s in, but we’ll never know because we’re not sure what that number is, to begin with. Regardless, it looks like, for now, Hawkeye will see his mission through.
