Marvel Reveals Peggy Carter Will Return In ‘What If…?’ Season 2
When What If…? premieres on Disney+, Marvel fans are going to get to see alternate possibilities for their favorite characters. The animated series shows what would have happened to Marvel characters had events gone differently. The Watcher (voice of Jeffrey Wright) tells stories about Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and more.

The producer and writer of Marvel’s What If…? said Peggy Carter’s story may take more than one episode to complete. She is featured on the season premiere, but producer Brad Winderbaum and head writer A.C. Bradley said they’re not done with Carter just yet. What If…? premieres Aug. 11 on Disney+ with new episodes every Wednesday.
Peggy Carter becomes Captain Carter in Marvel’s ‘What If…?’
The Watcher’s very first What If…? scenario asks what if Peggy Carter took the super serum instead of Steve. She becomes Captain Carter, that’s what.
“We realized arly on in development, as we were starting to get A.C.’s scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series, that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important,” Winderbaum said. “Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series. And that’s Captain Carter.”
You’ll see Captain Carter again on Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ but not for a while
Winderbaum continued to specify when Captain Carter would return on Marvel’s What If…? You’ll have to be patient while they do a whole season of what ifs first.
“As we started developing the second season, Captain Carter was going be the character we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure,” Winderbaum said. “Obviously, we’re telling a story on a giant, multiversal canvas, so you never really know who’s going to pop up where and when. It’s very much an anthology, but there’s always opportunity for fun connections to be made.”
Even in the multiverse, Peggy Carter is the heart of the show
Bradley further explained Carter’s importance to Marvel’s What If…? Peggy Carter proved to be the heart of the Captain America movies and ultimately Avengers: Endgame. That holds true in her animated form, too.
When it came to creating an episode, figuring out the story of What If…?, the last thing we thought about was the what if. I think what we all looked for was what’s the heart behind the hero? How do we get behind the shield? What’s a part of the story we haven’t told before? For me, these characters are iconic. We recognize their silhouettes, we recognize their taglines, but what’s important is how we connect to them. So, it was finding new ways to connect to Peggy Carter, to Thor Odinson, to Dr. Strange. And, luckily, we have The Watcher to be our guide ‘cause he, too, is looking for a connection. That’s really what drove everything, was character. Then we kind of figured out the what if.A.C.
