Marvel Rumor: A New Team May Be Joining the MCU Soon

Disney+ is providing new opportunities for original content. Marvel and Star Wars are already getting their own original series on the streaming service.

The Mandalorian and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are highly anticipated by fans, and Disney pulled out all the stops to make them. Both shows cost $10 million to $15 million dollars, per episode, to make.

Time will tell if that bet pays off for Disney. But, in the meantime, there are more Marvel stories out there waiting to be made. And we just heard what the next one might be.

Marvel is developing ‘Thunderbolts’

The Thunderbolts team first appeared in Marvel comics in the 1990s. The team is a group of villains turned heroes. They fight evil, similar to the Avengers. Most have superpowers, but all of the members of the team are former bad guys.

The team was introduced to the comics after all the Avengers were defeated or killed. The world needed a superhero team, and the Thunderbolts stepped up.

The twist in the origin of these heroes allowed Marvel to explore complex character motivations in the comics. Since all of the Thunderbolts members were once evil, there are times when it’s hard to tell if they’re good or bad.

Who might appear in ‘Thunderbolts’?

The Thunderbolts comics went through a few iterations, and the roster of villains who appeared on the team at one point or another is long. There is some overlap with characters Marvel has already developed on-screen, like Justin Hammer, Ghost, and Abomination. They may be making reappearances in any new project.

The convener of the Thunderbolts team, Secretary Ross, has been spotted on the set of Black Widow. It’s possible Marvel will use the solo film to launch a Thunderbolts franchise.

Baron Helmut Zemo was a one time leader of the Thunderbolts team in the comics. He is going to be making a character in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. So, again, it’s possible Marvel will use his appearance on the show as a platform to launch a new Thunderbolts project, either in film or on the silver screen.

Marvel often uses its projects to tease future work or to introduce new characters that will be important in other projects. The Marvel movies are famous for their ‘stingers’ — or teasers — at the end of a movie, after the credits.

They’ve used ‘stingers’ to tease Avengers movies and solo films alike. With a new Marvel movie coming out in May, fans are wondering if we’ll get a Thunderbolts ‘stinger’ too.

Will ‘Thunderbolts’ be on Disney+?

We’re not sure if Thunderbolts will be a movie or a series, or anything at all. It’s possible that Marvel will decide not to develop the concept.

If Thunderbolts does end up being produced, it will almost certainly be on Disney+ at some point. Disney has almost everything it has ever made or bought on the platform.

A feature film may go to theaters first, and then be released on Disney+. Or, it’s possible that Disney will take a page out of Netflix’s book, and release films directly to the platform in the future. A Thunderbolts project may be one such movie.

We’ve heard that even though Avengers: Endgame meant the end for most of the Avengers, it won’t be the last time we’ll see them on screen. Rumor has it that Black Widow may be back, even after her solo film. While fans would be happy to see fallen Avengers brought back for future movies, a new series with fresh characters and stories would be just as exciting, if not more.
