Marvel Rumor: Will ‘Ant-Man 3’ Set Up ‘Young Avengers’?

It’s official: There’s another Ant-Man film on the way. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe entry including who will star in it, what it could be about, and exciting film it’s poised to set up.

There are two Ant-Man movies

Paul Rudd portrays Scott Lang in Ant-Man. The film, released in 2015, showcases the character, an engineer who is also a skilled thief. On a mission, he encounters Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne, a father-daughter duo who are responsible for the Ant-Man technology. Lang dons the suit and helps them out.

In the second film, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Scott and Hope are now a couple. She uses similar technology as the Wasp, and they now have more problems in the form of a woman with molecular instability, a man who wants to steal their tech, and saving Hope’s mother, Janet, from the quantum realm. There’s a lot more, but that’s the gist.

How ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set up a third ‘Ant-Man’ movie

In Captain America: Civil War, Scott meets the rest of the Avengers (he previously met Falcon in Ant-Man), and helps Captain America and the team fighting against the Soviet Accords. He’s then on house arrest for his crimes in Ant-Man and the Wasp. And the end of the film, he’s trapped in the quantum realm when Janet, Hank, and Hope all disappear with Thanos’ snap.

With a lot of luck, Scott finds himself back in the world in 2023. He assists the Avengers using his time travel technology in Avengers: Endgame, and is then reunited with Hope. Additionally, his daughter, Cassie (now a teenager, as she wasn’t a victim of “the Blip,” is there by his side. This looks to be the perfect set up for another Ant-Man film.

So far, very little is known about a third Ant-Man movie. It was not announced at San Diego Comic-Con as part of the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. But given how well the previous two films did, it would have been surprising if they hadn’t gone forward with the property.

Now, it’s official. Ant-Man 3 (as it will be known until we have a real title) is in the pre-production stages. Director Peyton Reed, who helmed the first two movies, will return, and a release in 2022 is expected. Additionally, Michael Douglas revealed to Collider that filming for the movie will begin in Jan. 2021.

How ‘Young Avengers’ could tie-in

Now that the Avengers as we know them are no more (with Iron Man and Black Widow deceased, Captain America an old man, Hulk no longer who he once was, and Thor and Hawkeye with their own new adventures), what comes next? Allegedly, there’s another team-up film in the making, likely titled something along the lines of The New Avengers or The Young Avengers.

We’ve speculated about who will be a part of the next generation of young heroes in the MCU. One of the most likely participants is Cassie Lang herself, who has gone by the monikers of Stature and Sting in the comics. If Ant-Man 3 is coming in to set up another movie, we have a feeling it will heavily involve Cassie and her next moves in the MCU.
