Marvel Rumors: Spider-Man Could Appear in a ‘Secret Wars’ Flick

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are desperate to see a Secret Wars flick, and if rumors are to be believed it might be happening sooner rather than later. In fact, rumors began swirling that Secret Wars would come to the big screen almost a year ago, but when Sony and Disney hit a stalemate in their negotiations, fans all but gave up hope. Now, with Spider-Man safely back in the MCU (at least for now), the Secret Wars talk has kicked back up. So, what’s going on with the potential movie?

The Russo brothers are into the idea of a Secret Wars movie

The Russo brothers gave rise to rumors of the film being in the pipeline when they showed up at a Q&A panel in Los Angeles back in November 2018. The duo, famed for their work with Marvel, noted that they would only return to Marvel after Avengers: Endgame if they could direct the Secret Wars movie, according to Inverse.

The Russo brothers aren’t the only ones on board with the idea though. In April 2019, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, the writing team behind Avengers: Endgame said they’d be more than happy to write the script for the film as long as the Russo brothers were directing it.

Screen Rant reached out to the writing duo to discuss the prospect, and they were both totally into the idea. McFeely told the publication, “If Joe and Anthony do another Marvel movie and they don’t have us write it, I will be personally offended.”

Even with a writing team ready to pounce, and the Russo brothers on board to direct, Marvel is staying pretty quiet about the prospect of a film. The return of Spider-Man to the MCU, however, has most fans thinking the rumor will become a reality sooner or later.

Will Spider-Man appear in the rumored film?

The Sony and Disney agreement is a big deal for fans of comic book movies. Not only does it ensure the health of the MCU, but it also brings Spider-Man back into the fold. Spider-Man, after all, appears to be what the whole deal hinged on, and rumor has it that a Secret Wars movie was what all the fuss was about.

An established writer and Marvel expert shared some revelations in a private Facebook group the day the new Sony/Disney deal was announced. According to Inverse, Mikey Sutton, an insider who predicted several big Marvel announcements, claims that Marvel studios wants Tom Holland in their universe so they can use him in a Secret Wars movie.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is also rumored to be making an appearance in several other upcoming Marvel titles. The studio has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors.

What would a Secret Wars movie be about?

Secret Wars was a comic book series published in the 1980s. In the series, the main character, Beyonder, is so intrigued by the superheroes and villains on earth that he teleports them into a distant galaxy to do battle.

Hawkeye, the Avengers, Mister Fantastic, The Thing, Human Torch, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and The Hulk all make appearances in the “battleworld.” Marvel reimagined the series in 2015, but with a spin involving Deadpool.

The very nature of the series lends itself well to Kevin Feige’s MCU mission. Not only does it involve several notable characters, but it forces them to clash with one another. Isn’t that the entire point of the cinematic universe that Marvel has created? In fact, it’s so closely connected, that it would only make sense to craft a Secret Wars movie. If and when it will happen, however, remains unknown
