‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: Amy Sherman-Palladino Says Liza Weil Will ‘Hopefully’ Return After Season 3 Appearance

Liza Weil might be back for more in Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The actress who worked with Amy Sherman-Palladino on Gilmore Girls and the show’s 2016 Netflix revival — Weil played Paris Geller, the overachieving, and sometimes terrifying, classmate and friend of Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) — made an appearance in Season 3 of Sherman-Palladino’s award-winning Amazon original series as Carole Keen, a bassist, and the only woman, in Shy Baldwin’s (Leroy McClain) band.

Weil appeared in three episodes

The actress is no stranger to the small screen. She’s currently on How to Get Away with Murder, which is in its sixth and final season. Weil’s current job meant Sherman-Palladino had to get permission from Weil’s bosses at ABC to appear in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

“They were very nice to us,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLine of ABC allowing Weil to participate in two episodes which later became three. “[Sic] We needed her for a third, and, luckily, [ABC] played ball with us.”

Weil’s character first crossed paths with Midge in a hotel hallway where the comedian witnessed the musician turn down an advance from a drunk member of the band. Later, Carole and Midge bonded over life on the road.

Character is inspired by a real person

Sherman-Palladino worked with her husband, Daniel Palladino, who is also an executive producer on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to create a character inspired by the real-life bass guitarist Carol Kaye who performed on hits from The Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Simon and Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, and more, according to Esquire.

It didn’t take the duo long to figure out who they wanted to play the role of Keen.

“We [knew we] needed somebody interesting to […] and we thought only of Liza,” Sherman-Palladino told the news outlet.

Bringing back the Gilmore Girls alum worked out so well, Sherman-Palladino would like to do it again in the future. “I love her and hopefully, we will have her [back],” the creator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel said about Weil.

Weil’s character had a few scenes across three episodes. Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) where they bonded about life on the road while on tour with Baldwin. Fans of Gilmore Girls enjoyed seeing Weil in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as did Sherman-Palladino.

Weil’s ‘a comedic genius’

Sherman-Palladino continued to gush about Weil, raving about her comedy chops and how she first met the actress during auditions for Gilmore Girls

“Liza is a comedic genius — that is the bottom line,” she said. “She auditioned for [Gilmore Girls‘] Rory. And she was so weird I was like, ‘Well, she can’t be Rory… ‘But she was just so interesting and so funny that when [Gilmore Girls was picked up to series] we were like, ‘We have to get her in.’ So we created Paris for her.”

“Anytime we can work with Liza we will,” she added.

Clearly, Sherman-Palladino would love to work with Weil again in the future. As she said, we’ll hopefully see more of her in Season 4. And with How To Get Away With Murder coming to an end in 2020, Weil will be available to resume her role as Keen in upcoming episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. We’d love to see Weil opposite Brosnahan and Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein).
