‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Star Rachel Brosnahan On Why Losing Led to ‘The Best Golden Globes Ever’ In 2020

The beloved Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has earned the streaming service, its creator, and the cast themselves a lot of praise. And Rachel Brosnahan is chief among them. Though she lost at the 2020 Golden Globes, here’s why she enjoyed the event even more than in previous years.

Rachel Brosnahan stars in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’

Brosnahan portrays Midge Maisel in the series. Now airing for three seasons, the show began with the Manhattan housewife who, after her husband leaves her abruptly, finds herself pursuing a career as a standup comedian. Under the stage name Mrs. Maisel, she begins to navigate the very strange world of entertainment.

Midge’s journey has continued in intriguing ways through Season 3. We’ve seen her working to keep her job a secret from her family, adjust to a male-dominated industry, and even start to date, all while the relationship with her ex-husband goes through its own changes. Also along for the ride are her parents, her former in-laws, and her manager, Susie (Alex Borstein).

She was nominated at the Golden Globes for the third year in a row

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a huge hit for Amazon’s Prime Video service. Its first season dropped just in time to qualify it for the 75th Golden Globes, where it won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Brosnahan took home the award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. And Brosnahan won the award for the second time in 2019 for Season 2.

So it was unsurprising that the actress was up for the same award this year for Season 3. However, this time around, both Brosnahan and the show lost out to Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her own Amazon hit, Fleabag.

Why Brosnahan said the 2020 Golden Globes were ‘the best’

Brosnahan, for her part, says she wasn’t at all disappointed to lose this time around. She told the host on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she’s “a huge, huge Fleabag fan,” adding that she was “really excited for them” to secure those awards. But there was another reason she enjoyed not winning in 2020.

“When you win — it’s amazing, that’s very exciting and great. But you get kind of whisked off backstage. And you don’t get to hang out at the table with your friends,” she said. “And you definitely don’t get to drink. So this year, I got to drink all night!” Brosnahan added, to laughter, “Best Globes ever!”

Brosnahan attended the awards show with her husband, actor Jason Ralph. You may recognize him from the Syfy series The Magicians. Together, the two walked the red carpet with a whole host of other celebrities. But disaster struck — in the form of a broken bowtie.

“All these famous people are on the floor, looking for the clip,” said Brosnahan, mentioning Amy Poehler and Rami Malek among them. “Rami finds it and goes, ‘Guys, I’ve got this.’ And he did! Somehow, he MacGyvered the thing and it went back together,” she told Kimmel.

Is ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ coming back for Season 4?

Though Brosnahan didn’t win at the year’s Golden Globe Awards, she’s likely to have a chance to take home the award a third time. Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was announced just days after Season 3 began airing in full on Amazon. And we’ve undoubtedly excited for more.

The end of Season 3 saw Midge watching her dreams fly away from her — literally. Will she be able to fix things? We certainly hope so. Though a premiere date hasn’t yet been announced, we can only assume that, like those before it, it will coincide with the holiday season.
