‘Marvel’s Runaways’ Cast on How ‘Cloak & Dagger’ Crossover Lets the Characters Know They’re Not Alone
Marvel’s Runaways cast members were at New York Comic Con to talk about it. This is what Lyrica Okano, Allegra Acosta, Ariela Barer said during a roundtable interview on Oct. 4.
The Runaways will have connections to Cloak and Dagger
Okano talked about the crossover being a game changer for their characters. That’s because they realized what’s possible with their powers.
“We kept it in the group and that was it,” she said, “and then for Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt) to come in, that’s when we first realized that like ‘Oh! There are other teenagers out there that are going through like similar things as us and like the same kind of struggles.'”
She gave a hint to what they will be doing in the episode. “Cloak and Dagger kind of come to The Runaways’ rescue in a way to help one of her own out of a tricky situation. So, yeah we learn to work together.”
Acosta also talked about how her character would feel less alone by meeting these characters. “Like hypothetically, if Molly we’re face to face with Cloak and Dagger, she will actually finally feel like she has someone who can understand what she’s going through.” she said.
The actress pointed out reasons why each character has something in common with Molly. “I mean Cloak, he’s dealing with this constant struggle between his racial identity throughout Cloak & Dagger. Whether he fits with that economical status, which is a true thing a lot of people of color deal with based on a trope or stereotype that’s driven in our name.”
Acosta later talked about Dagger with, “She lost her dad and her mother is an alcoholic. And for Molly she can relate to that because she’s dealing with both of those things internally.”
Barer said this meeting was important for her character too. “I think the Cloak & Dagger crossover was very important to Gert. In that sense, it kind of takes a little bit of a load off,” she said.
Barer later said, “It was very interesting and how our dynamics were actually very similar because we have a lot of knowledge on our world, and they have a lot of knowledge on their world.”
She added, “Like the characters, we were all just sharing our expertise with each other and coming to conclusions and fun adventures.”
They teased each other for how they act out their powers
Dagger and Karolina have powers that some would say are pretty similar. Gardner talked about how she bonded with Holt over their roles.
“Yeah, they definitely do and I will say Olivia and I had a connection also,” she said. “Because we both have to do our effects the same way where there’s lights that are glued to our bodies and we’re plugged into a wall.”
The actress continued, “So I was like ‘Hey, someone else knows what that’s like.’ And it was cool to be able to kind of commiserate with her on how we do a lot of that stuff.“
Gardner admitted that they all made fun of each other for how they look acting like they have powers without the effects. “We just had a lot of fun being like ‘Oh my God that’s how you do that?’ And kind of like laughing at it,” she said.
“And they’ll laugh at me like what I do like this and nothing comes out of my hand for the light shooting stuff,” she continued as she raised her hands. “So we kind of got to tease each other a bit for how we look when we’re doing these things.”
The cast hopes to have more episodes with the ‘Cloak & Dagger’ stars
Acosta talked about enjoying her time with Holt and Joseph. She is one of the many people who hope this crossover will lead to more.
“Audrey and Olivia are one of the coolest people ever,” said Acosta. “I was telling my mom this earlier, I was like ‘I mean I wouldn’t mind if we get picked up in season 4, they come to our show, and then we have a permanent show with Cloak and Dagger’ because they’re just awesome.”
Fans will have to wait a few more months before they can watch how the crossover plays out. The new season of Marvel’s Runaways will be released on Dec. 13 on Hulu.
