Matthew McConaughey Is Officially A Professor
It’s back to school season for students and teachers everywhere, but freshmen at one Texas university might not be able to control their selfie requests due to the fact that actor Matthew McConaughey is part of the staff. The Oscar winner has just been granted a new title at the school and is putting his talents to work this fall.
McConaughey is working in his home state of Texas
The actor will now be employed as a professor of practice at the University of Texas at Austin, the school where he earned his film degree in 1993, according to The Associated Press. McConaughey is part of the Moody College of Education’s radio, television, and film department, which is obviously a perfect fit.
With the new appointment, he’ll continue to teach a Script to Screen course that he helped to launch, but with extra perks. The university was thrilled to offer him a professorship, stating that they respect his “personal investment in student success and his willingness to work with students beyond the classroom.”
In a UT Austin press release, Moody College’s dean, Jay Bernhardt, gave McConaughey a warm welcome into the faculty fold:
“We are proud to welcome Professor McConaughey to officially join our world-class faculty. Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators.”
McConaughey’s been teaching at the university for several years
While it might come as a surprise to fans, McConaughey started off as an instructor at the school in 2015. E! News reports that originally, he was a co-teaching with another instructor, Scott Rice. The course he developed walks students through the minutiae of creating a film production from start to finish. McConaughey stated:
“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them. Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”
Course touches on McConaughey’s previous work
If you’re wondering how the class is structured, a peek at the syllabus from 2015 to date reveals that the actor revisits some of his old films for the purposes of study. In addition, McConaughey invites directors, writers, and producers from the movies to come in for class visits. This past spring, students studied The Gentlemen and the stoner comedy, The Beach Bum. Fall 2019 has The Gentlemen on the list as well as 2012’s Mud.
The director of marketing for Moody College told E! that as a professor, McConaughey will be enabled to provide mentorship for students, teach other courses, and participate in university offerings. But she added that his attendance in the Script to Screen course will depend on his schedule.
As far as acting projects, McConaughey is currently working on Sing 2 while The Gentlemen is in post-production and slated for a 2020 release. According to Sportspromedia, the actor has also jumped into sports ownership, buying a minority stake in Austin FC, a major league soccer team based in Texas.
