Did Matthew Perry Join Instagram Ahead of Official ‘Friends’ Reunion Special News?

Actor Matthew Perry has joined Instagram. What compelled him to give in as the last hold-out from the cast of Friends? Here’s why we think his return could have something to do with a certain rumored HBO Max reunion special.

Matthew Perry starred in ‘Friends’

Perry got his start in TV in the late ’80s. But it wasn’t until he landed the role of Chandler Bing in Friends that his career began to take off. The sarcastic character earned him his first Emmy nomination and helped him score a number of starring film roles, including The Whole Nine Yards.

When Friends ended, Perry starred in series such as Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Go On, and a reboot of The Odd Couple. But it didn’t seem to matter how many other parts he took; Perry, like much of the cast, is still best known for Friends.

A ‘Friends’ reunion is rumored

Over the years, the cast of Friends has been asked repeatedly about a revival or reunion special of some kind. Answers have varied from person to person, naturally. But as time has passed, nearly every one of them has said something positive about reuniting.

In Oct. 2019, we got the closest thing to a Friends reunion that we’ve ever had. Jennifer Aniston was the fifth of cast member to join Instagram, and she briefly broke the platform when she shared her very first post featuring all six of them together. Not long after, news of a TV reunion grew.

Perry tweeted about ‘Big news’

While Aniston’s decision to join Instagram was likely in part because she was promoting her return to TV with the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, the same can’t be said of Perry’s. In fact, the actor hasn’t been in a movie since 2009, and his last TV gig was the 2017 miniseries The Kennedys After Camelot.

So what brought him to the platform? Well, one day before his account was made public, Perry tweeted “Big news coming…” He could have simply been talking about his decision to join Instagram, but we have a feeling that he wouldn’t have made this leap without a career-related reason.

Kudrow posted when he joined Instagram

Who was the first Friend to welcome Perry to Instagram? None other than Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay on the series. The actress, who recently guest starred on the penultimate episode of The Good Place, shared the above photo of herself with her former co-star.

“Finally!!! Yay!! Can’t believe my eye MY EYES,” she wrote, referencing a moment from the episode in which her character sees Perry’s Chandler and Courteney Cox’s Monica getting physical from across the street. Speaking of Cox, she chimed in with a comment on the post, writing, “Yes Matty!!!”

Will HBO Max announce a ‘Friends’ reunion special next?

HBO Max is set to launch in May 2020. Ahead of this, numerous new shows have been announced, including the controversial Legendary. We also know that all ten seasons Friends will be available to watch. But what we really want to know about is that proposed reunion special.

So what is the likelihood that HBO Max announces this soon? Unless Perry really was just excited to join Instagram, the news could be coming any day now. Let’s hope we’re about to find out where the gang is now!
