Matthew Vaughn Says He Has Already Written a ‘Kingsman 3’ Treatment

Kingsman: The Golden Circle doesn’t open in theaters until next week, but director Matthew Vaughn says that he has already gotten to work on the sequel.

In a new interview with Hey U Guys, Vaughn said that he has written the treatment for Kingsman 3, i.e. a detailed outline of the movie that is produced before the first draft of the screenplay.

“I am planning another Kingsman,” he said. “I’ve written the treatment and some of the scenes.”

What remains unclear is whether Vaughn will actually return to direct the film. He directed Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented for him to hand off the franchise to another director. After all, although he directed Kick-Ass, he only served as producer on Kick-Ass 2 and handed directorial duties over to Jeff Wadlow. Still, it sounds like Vaughn will at the very least be writing the movie.

And the Kingsman franchise is close enough to Vaughn’s heart that it’s tough to imagine he wouldn’t return for a third outing, especially if that is to be the end of the series. Earlier this year, Vaughn said that he was planning Kingsman to be a trilogy of films. He also said that in some ways The Golden Circle builds into a third movie and that this one is sort of like The Empire Strikes Back in that it “took you to a cliff edge” before things resolve themselves in the next film.

“When we were writing it, we were thinking about ‘Kingsman 3’ too,” Vaughn told Variety. “This is the bridge, if we can pull it off and get to make another one.”

Vaughn has also been teasing that he has a “big idea” for the third film.

“Weirdly while we were writing Kingsman 2, we were thinking of Kingsman 3 as well, which is odd,” Vaughn told Deadline. “We’ve got a big idea for that. This is sort of the bridge and if we can pull this off, we’ll make another one.”

Kingsman: The Golden Circle looks like it will outperform the original at the box office, and so 20th Century Fox will likely be interested in a sequel. That said, Matthew Vaughn made clear in his interview with Hey U Guys today that he’s still deciding what his next project is going to be, and he confirmed that he has had discussions about directing a Superman movie. It was previously rumored that Vaughn was being considered to direct Man of Steel 2.

“I have had chats about Superman,” he said. “I love Superman. I like superheroes. I’m sort of nervous of the world suddenly getting sick of superheroes and me being the guy, if I did another superhero film, that starts the trend of everyone not liking them anymore. But if somebody asks me to do, whether it’s Indiana Jones, most of the superheroes, or Star Wars, the fanboy in me can’t help but be excited and think, ‘Oh my god, this would be great.'”

Kingsman: The Golden Circle will hit theaters on September 22.
