Though Marvel has undoubtedly been the winner in the MCU v. DCEU battle over the past few years, the latter did one-up the former in one way. DC released Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, in 2017, more than a year and a half before the MCU finally stepped up to the plate with its first superheroine origin story.

Fortunately, when we finally got Captain Marvel, it did not disappoint. Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers took us on an exciting ride through the ‘90s, and also acted as sort of an origin story for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury as well. The film did very well at the box office, bringing in over $1 billion worldwide.

Captain Marvel led into Avengers: Endgame

We can forgive Marvel for taking so long to release Captain Marvel because of how necessary the timing was in regards to the Infinity Gauntlet Saga. The flick was released just two months before Avengers: Endgame, which was the culmination of the last 11 years of MCU entries.

And Captain Marvel herself played a small, yet notable role. She was responsible for bringing Tony Stark and Nebula back to Earth after they were stranded in space following Thanos’ snap. She was also around for the final battle with Thanos in 2023. They definitely couldn’t have done it without her.

Marvel announced its upcoming films at San Diego Comic-Con

Just as Marvel Studios did with Captain Marvel and its other films before and since, the brand waited until San Diego Comic-Con to share the most exciting MCU movie and TV news with fans. And 2019 was possibly the greatest year yet for these announcements.

A whole host of films were confirmed, including Black Widow, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Eternals. Additionally, several MCU-affiliated TV series are headed to Disney+, including Loki and Falcon and the Winter Soldier

When will we get Captain Marvel 2?

While five films and five TV shows all received exact or approximate release dates, Captain Marvel 2 was among those projects that Kevin Feige didn’t have time to discuss during the San Diego Comic-Con panel this year. However, the film was mentioned, so we can at least count on that.

We can also deduce which of three likely dates Captain Marvel 2 may be released on. A schedule shared by Disney publicity earlier this year listed Feb. 18, May 6, and July 29, 2022, as dates for upcoming Marvel films. Chances are, we’ll find out more at the D23 Expo in August.

Here’s how it could tie into Spider-Man: Far From Home

The latest MCU entry is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which closed out Phase 3. Though Carol Danvers wasn’t in the movie, she did receive a name drop — and there’s a tie-in to her film that could reveal something about the plot of Captain Marvel 2.

In the second post-credit scene, we discover that the Maria Hill and Nick Fury we saw in Far From Home were actually the Skrulls, Soren and Talos. We then see the real Fury commanding a Skrull ship. Will Captain Marvel 2 reveal more about what happened in the years between 1995 and 2008 (when Iron Man was released), and perhaps when (and why) Fury has someone filling in for him? We can only hope.
