MCU: Is ‘Captain Marvel 2’ Going to Make the Same Mistake as ‘Iron Man 2’?

It’s not every day that you get cast as a superhero. So no wonder Brie Larson marked the four-year anniversary of when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Oscar-winning star of Room made her debut as the titular hero in Captain Marvel in 2019. And following a show-stopping appearance in Avengers: Endgame, fans are primed and ready for Captain Marvel 2. But could the sequel make a classic MCU mistake?

‘Captain Marvel 2’ is coming, but what will it be about?

Following the $1.1 billion worldwide gross of Captain Marvel, everyone knew a sequel was coming. But Marvel Studios didn’t officially announce it until April 2020. Now fans can expect the movie to hit theaters on July 8, 2022. But what is the plot of Captain Marvel 2?

Actually, no one really knows yet. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has teased the sequel could be set between the first movie and the hero’s re-emergence in Avengers: Endgame. Yet, most of the rumors have revolved around what Captain Marvel might be up to in the present day.

In the meantime, Larson has been enjoying her break from the MCU. The actor has started a YouTube channel and been very active in social media. But it’s likely getting to be about time for her to start thinking about getting back into Carol Danvers’ headspace for the sequel.

The movie could suffer the same problem as another MCU sequel

Captain Marvel introduced the hero to mainstream audiences. The movie — directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — chronicled Carol Danvers’ origin story and set up a ton of potential for more stories. However, the sequel could be about to make a big mistake.

Similarly to Captain Marvel, Iron Man single-handedly made Tony Stark an iconic character and kickstarted the MCU. Larson is reportedly in line to step up as the figurehead of the franchise going forward, following Robert Downey Jr.’s departure.

So Captain Marvel 2 has a lot riding on it. Yet, just like Iron Man 2, the upcoming film could be taking on too much. If Carol Danvers is destined to lead the MCU, her sophomore effort could be saddled with a lot of setup for Phase 5.

Will Captain Marvel still be able to lead her own sequel?

After all, the story of Iron Man 2 similarly suffered because of how it leads directly into The Avengers. It also introduced Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), developed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and gave fans the origin of War Machine (Don Cheadle).

As a result, Many fans believe Iron Man 2 had to do too much heavy lifting. Rather than tell a focused solo story, it suffered under the weight of the greater MCU. And if rumors hold true, Captain Marvel 2 will bring in other heroes, robbing Larson of the spotlight.

Some sources claim the movie will include Spider-Man, while others report Nova, Ms. Marvel, and others will play pivotal roles. If Captain Marvel 2 does serve as the end of Phase 4, it makes sense it will tee up what comes next but hopefully not at its title hero’s expense.
