MCU X-Men: Is Shia LaBeouf Really Going to Play One of the Original Mutant Heroes?

Even though Marvel Studios has remained quiet so far, the X-Men are on their way. The big question is which, if any, actors will reprise their Fox roles for Disney. Yet, in the absence of news, fans have turned to rumor and speculation. The latest buzz claims Shia LaBeouf might join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of the MCU X-Men. But how official is this news?

The X-Men will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point

After 20 years and a dozen movies over at Fox, X-Men has a proven connection with audiences. Even though not all of the films are beloved, the Marvel mutants have a built-in fan base and decades of source material just waiting for the MCU treatment. So, of course, Marvel Studios is eager to integrate the characters into the movies as soon as possible.

However, the hit-and-miss track record of the Fox movies means Marvel needs to tread carefully. The MCU X-Men has a lot to live up to, after all. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X are difficult acts to follow. Both stars walked away from their respective roles after 2017’s Logan, leaving the MCU to choose how to relaunch the X-Men.

Reports say Shia LaBeouf will join the MCU X-Men

For the most part, fans have assumed the MCU X-Men will start completely from scratch. With the notable exception of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, that might be the case. So if Marvel Studios will recast the core X-Men, the next question is who will take those roles. Rumors claim Janelle Monae could play Storm, and now Shia LaBeouf is reportedly in line for another key role.

According to We Got This Covered, Marvel Studios is looking at the actor to play Iceman in the MCU X-Men. Shawn Ashmore previously played that role in the original X-Men trilogy and returned for 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Notably, this would be a supporting role that could grow into a more prominent one if LaBeouf signs on, the site claims.

Among general audiences, LaBeouf is probably still best known for the Transformers franchise. However, he’s delivered a string of acclaimed performances in smaller movies such as Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon. And this isn’t the first time rumors swirled about LaBeouf joining the MCU. He was once reportedly up to play Marvel’s Moon Knight.

But is the actor really in talks to play Iceman?

Of course, there’s a lot of misinformation out there these days. So this report should still be considered a rumor until Marvel or LaBeouf confirms it. That being said, casting the actor as Iceman does fit for a number of reasons. First off, the actor has clearly rehabilitated his career and is working on his public image. Taking on an MCU role will help on both counts.

Moreover, Iceman is exactly the kind of hero Marvel Studios would want as part of the MCU X-Men. Ashmore’s performance was well-received but by no means iconic. And Iceman’s status as one of the original X-Men supports the popular notion that the MCU version of the team will take its cues from the initial comic book run. Stay tuned as this story continues to develop.
