MCU X-Men: ‘Rocketman’ Star Taron Egerton Responds to Those Wolverine Casting Rumors

For nearly 20 years, the X-Men (mostly) thrived at Fox. Sure, the series has seen its share of creative and box office disappointments. But regardless, the franchise proved to be one of the studio’s most lucrative. Now it’s time for the next stage of the Marvel mutants’ own evolution: the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what will the MCU X-Men look like?

Ever since Disney’s acquisition of Fox, fans have speculated how the team could be integrated into the MCU. Perhaps Marvel Studios would draw inspiration from the original X-Men comics. Or maybe, against all odds, the MCU could tie into the Fox X-Men series. Now, for his part, Taron Egerton — long rumored to be the new Wolverine — has finally opened up about it.

Taron Egerton has been rumored to play Wolverine in the MCU X-Men

After the release of 2017’s Logan, Hugh Jackman officially retired from playing Wolverine. For 17 years and across nine movies, Jackman redefined the character. So anyone who takes on Wolverine in the MCU X-Men has big shoes to fill. And for much of the time since, Egerton has been one of the actors most associated with the role.

It’s easy to see why too. Egerton is no stranger to comic book movies. He’s already starred in two Kingsman movies under X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn. And presumably, Egerton will return for a third entry at some point. Plus, at 30 years old, the actor is nearly the same age Jackman was when he first played Wolverine.

Now the ‘Rocketman’ and ‘Kingsman’ star has finally reacted

Whether Wolverine appears early on or not, the MCU X-Men will absolutely need to introduce the fan-favorite character at some point. And on paper, Egerton seems like a solid choice for the role. But according to an interview with GQ, the Wolverine rumors simply aren’t true, no matter how much fan art is out there of him in the role.

“That anyone thinks I would be good for the part is really flattering,” Egerton said. “I love Marvel, but it’s just fan stuff. There is no grounding for those rumors. … Surprisingly, I don’t have any pictures of myself up on the wall.”

At this point, there’s no reason to think Egerton is hiding anything. By all accounts, Marvel Studios hasn’t yet taken action in building the X-Men into the MCU. Yet, it does seem like the actor is at least open to joining the franchise. Fan casting rumors have come true before. So there’s no reason those hoping to see Egerton don the adamantium claws should give up.

Taron Egerton has already shared the screen with Hugh Jackman

Jackman previously endorsed Tom Hardy as his successor. But he’s not likely to be disappointed if Egerton gets the role. After all, Jackman and Egerton became friends on the set of their 2016 film Eddie the Eagle. Egerton reteamed with that movie’s direct, Dexter Fletcher, for his Golden Globe-winning performance in 2019’s Rocketman.

With proven range on-screen, a rapport with the right people, and a rising career ahead of him, Egerton does feel like the perfect fit for the MCU X-Men. Of course, it’s hard to tell if he fits Marvel’s vision for this new version of the character just yet. All fans can do is wait for official word from Marvel Studios about what the future holds for the mutants.
