MCU’s ‘The Eternals’ Will Reportedly Have a Married Gay Character

The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will include The Eternals. The cast of the movie has been announced and it looks racially diverse. It has also been revealed it will feature a married gay character. Find out how and more about the franchise’s history with representation.

Avengers: Endgame got backlash over gay character

Many fans are excited to have more LGBTQ characters in the franchise. They were let down to find out the first gay character was a minor role of a man played by Joe Russo grieving in a support group in Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel president Kevin Feige addressed the backlash with io9 for the role not being enough representation. “That was just meant to be a matter of fact and a matter of life and a matter of truth,” he said.

“I liked it that our hero, Steve Rogers, doesn’t blink an eye at that fact. It is just truth and is heartbreaking for his loss and for the life he’s trying to put back together. It was never meant to be looked at as our first hero,” he explained. Feige then said there will be “much more prominent LGBT heroes in the future.

Photos of the cast of The Eternals were shown

The Eternals will follow a race of immortals that were created by Celestials. They have watched over humans for centuries.

The cast of the upcoming movie took the stage at the D23 Expo, according to Entertainment Weekly. The cast includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, and Don Lee.

Henry talked a little more about their characters. “It’s in the title. We’re eternal,” he told Variety. “That’s exactly it. We’re here to save humanity. And we built humanity and we’re here to save humanity because, sometimes, you know, in this world we live in, things don’t always go as planned. And we are gods, in a way.”

Nanjiani added, “In a way, without us, there would be no Avengers, there would be no Guardians of the Galaxy, there would be no galaxy. So, you’re welcome, Chris Pratt’s character.”

Kevin Feige said there will be a married gay character

After talk of needing more representation in the franchise, it looks like there will be a new character to help address that.

Feige said there will be a gay character in The Eternals. He didn’t specify which one. “He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is,” said Feige on Good Morning America.

This is all after Tessa Thompson got fans excited about her character getting a love story in Thor: Love and Thunder. “First of all, as new King [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen, so that will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted,” she said at San Diego Comic-Con.

It’s known that Valkyrie is bisexual, although the scene acknowledging that was cut from Thor: Ragnarok. Feige confirmed there will be an openly queer relationship in the movie.

“The answer is yes,” he told io9. “How that impacts the story remains to be seen with that level of representation you’ll see across our films, not in just Thor 4.

The Eternals will be released in the fall of 2020. Fans will have to wait for more details about the character.
