Meghan Markle Always Wanted to Be More Than Just a Cliché
Meghan Markle did not want to be just another pretty face on a billboard, or another young girl from LA striving to be an actress. She had much bigger goals than that. When she went to college she double-majored in theater and international relations to ensure she’d have a leg up in the business. Landing her most recent role as a member of the royal family is definitely more than she ever dreamed she’d be.
Meghan Markle had dreams of being an actress
Markle couldn’t avoid the allure of becoming an actress. She grew up in LA and is the daughter of Thomas Markle, who was a lighting director on the sitcom Married With Children. Since her dad spent a lot of time on the set, young Meghan did too. She was exposed, early on, to what life would be like as an actress.
In 2011, landing a role on Suits was a dream come true. She promptly moved to Toronto to film the series and that is where she lived until she moved to be with Prince Harry.
But, Markle wanted much more than to be just another pretty face
Meghan explains to Marie Claire that she was always a little nerdy, and although she was very interested in pursuing acting she didn’t want to be a cliché.
“I had always been the theater nerd at Northwestern University.” She admits. “I knew I wanted to do acting, but I hated the idea of being this cliché—a girl from L.A. who decides to be an actress. I wanted more than that, and I had always loved politics, so I ended up changing my major completely, and double-majoring in theater and international relations.”
Double-majoring not only kept her busy during school, but unbeknownst to Meghan at the time, would prove to come in very handy later in life. Her background in international relations is extremely helpful now that she is traveling the globe with her royal husband.
“By my junior year I had finished most of my credits, and I applied for an internship at the U.S. Embassy,” She continues. “…so I ended up working in the embassy in Buenos Aires for a few months.” Her experiences at the embassy likely coming in very handy for her as she navigates being an ambassador for the queen.
Although she did join a sorority, which seems pretty cliche to us…Meghan didn’t let her aspirations of acting or her beauty typecast her life.
Meghan Markle has brains and beauty
Meghan has also noted that her time in the Embassy helped her with her role on Suits. It definitely helped her to focus her energies on situations and issues outside the realm of her normal life, which assisted her in digging deeper into her character, Rachel, on the show.
“I will say that working in the embassy has rooted my performance for [Suits] in a different way. I love the intelligence that’s written into Rachel. Look, my very first audition was for ‘Hot Girl #1’ in some movie. It’s the ultimate for me that the writers are able to go ‘Sure, you can be a pretty girl, but there’s so much more to her.'”
There’s so much more to Meghan as well as is evidenced by all the inspiring work she has accomplished since becoming a member of The Royal Family.
Markle’s newest role is more than she expected
Marrying Prince Harry turned Meghan’s fame into more than she could have ever anticipated. As a member of one of the highest-profile families in the world, Meghan has definitely become more than just another Hollywood sweetheart. Meghan’s new role as the Duchess of Sussex and mother to one of the queen’s own descendants has completely changed her life.
She’s become one of the world’s foremost fashion icons, a politically charged and opinionated world leader, and is learning to be a good mom too. Meghan doesn’t have to worry, she is most definitely not a cliche. Her fame may be attributed to her husband’s lineage, but she can certainly hold her own. She is extremely qualified to carry out her royal duties and although she’s also beautiful, her intelligence and humanitarian efforts cannot be ignored.
